- Following Directions 7:00pm Apr 1|6 Comments

To promote our latest project, Lovethescene, we've launched an international ad campaign that spans a growing number of cities and countries throughout the world. "We really want to bring the world to our doorstep," says Foozoo CEO Patrick Widen...

Everybody does it. When you’re in the middle of something, whatever it may be, words describing the success or failure of your actions emerge almost uncontrollably from your mouth and, at least if you’re like me, the entire thing transpires without even mildly attracting your attention...

Following directions isn’t always a “bad thing.” In fact, sometimes it’s almost a necessity. Take the fine print on the back of your prescription, for example. It’s probably not a good idea to decide that this is your best opportunity to defy the status quo and do something different...

Since I was a kid, I’ve always hated the idea of being paraded through the endless charade of basic concepts that everyone knows (or should know) don’t work out so perfectly most of the time...

In a split second, someone’s experience with your company can easily shape the entire relationship between the two of you for years to come. It sounds cliché, but it’s not exactly a common practice to translate what everybody “knows” into actual experiences that make people smile...

Being first is hard. Doing something that has never been done before is hard. Finding a way to make something that might not even work break through with a ray of success is hard. But, just because it’s “hard,” doesn’t mean you should confuse it with impossible...

While sitting at the mall earlier today, I noticed something odd. Not surprising, just odd. For every person who took the stairs, fifty took the escalator. We live in a world in which convenience is no longer a dream; it’s a reality...

I don’t write a blog post every day for the simple reason that I don’t have something that’s truly inspiring, relevant, and unique to say every day. I think it’s far more important to write what’s important than to simply write something as often as possible...

I and many others spend a lot of time talking about what could be done better within the worlds of design and marketing. But, if you really stop and think about it for a minute, it’s amazing how well things seem to work already. Sure, there’s a bad experience here or there...

It’s no secret that consumers are falling head over heels for anything green these days. But, at least for now, their lust for eco-friendly products is conditioned by the rising price tags that they carry...

There’s something very wrong in the world of sales. Profits and products have taken the place of an asset that’s far more important to your company than anything else - people...

The dominant news story this week was, almost without a doubt, theinaugurationof Barrack Obama, the 44th President. Or was it...

After watching Fox’s pilot for their new show, Lie to Me, the other night, I did a little research to find out whether or not it’s actually possible to tell whether or not someone’s lying just by looking at their face. Long story short? Yes, it is...

Watching the inauguration today, I was reminded of something that I’ve noticed ever since I was a little boy - the media (in this article, television media) don’t have a lot of material to talk about (but they try to anyways)...

I just came from the mall and noticed something peculiar about a few of the ads displayed on the kiosks throughout the building. A number of ads highlighting grand openings, promotions, and sales that took place in October and November of 2008 are still up in January 2009...

Most companies exist to make a profit while (hopefully) making their customers happy. No doubt, if you’re employed in an organization led by someone other than yourself, this is likely the mantra that drives your company’s actions. It is business, after all...

Everyonedoes it. You do it, I do it, and all of the people that you meet, know, and interact with every day do it. We cling to little words and phrases, cadence and pronunciation, that differentiate the ways that we talk from those around us...

Eating out doesn’t have to be expensive. The system is rigged to poke and prod you into spending money that you don’t need to spend. But, fear not; there are a few little tricks that can save you some cash at your favorite restaurant without taking the fun out of eating out...

Have you ever found the perfect potato chip in the worst looking bag? Or the best tasting chocolates in a plain, boring container...

After finishing Malcolm Gladwell’s most recent masterpiece, Outliers, which details success in relation to culture and opportunity, I decided to explore a small opportune phenomenon of my own. When I was a child, I attended Montessori school at the wishes of my parents...

Everything is worth something. Economics thrives on that notion and very proudly works to weigh the opportunity costs of this, that, and the other to determine the utility of an item, action, or desire...

Many of you may have noticed that the blog has fallen silent over the past few months. We’ve been hard at work on some top-secret projects that will be part of Foozoo’s 2009 line-up with our new design search engine, Fiazo, already well on its way to success...

Today is an exciting day. I’ve just finished up the first beta version of a brand new search engine called Fiazo...

It’s no secret; everyone likes to think that they are eating healthy. Of course, healthy means different things to different people...

Given where I spend most of my time each week, I tend to catch a few meals a day from a cafeteria on-site. It’s not much different from any other cafeterias that I (or you for that matter) have seen. If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all...

Attracting and keeping customers doesn’t have to be rocket science. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to make people happy. In fact, if you do, you’re far more likely to just confuse them...

As you said, Sam Walton didn't ... Read Moreset out to become Wal-Mart. It's an incredible challenge to maintain the innovative power of a small firm once you've become a big one. In fact, that's exactly the problem that companies like P&G are facing today.
Their solution, however, is to stop "following directions" in favor of pursuing new solutions. More and more, big companies are starting to look like umbrella corporations that are made up of dozens of tinier firms. In terms of the corporate, that's the future (and present) of how (at least for now) companies can solve the innovation dilemma. (More In Next Comment)
