Source: photokayaker.fit2paddle.com
I had some big plans for paddling in October, but I ended up just visiting my local waters near Fort Collins. I was paddling my Thunderbolt kayak on Beaver Pond in Arapaho Natural Area and on Lonetree Reservoir.

If I don’t have an opportunity to paddle I try to compensate by watching some racing videos. Open water racing is always exotic for me living in Colorado.

I don’t often paddle on Douglas Lake since it is on the “wrong” side of town – north of Fort Collins near Wellington. However, I launched my Thunderbolt kayak there on September 14, 2009.

Fit2Paddle Missouri River 340 Race Records

Source: race.fit2paddle.com
MR340 started in 2006 with just 15 boats and four years later we had 271 boats at the Kaw Point. I counted 437 racers in the race roster in solo, tandem and team divisions. How many people participated in the race if we add all organizers, volunteers, safety boats, and land crew? 1000 or more?

Fit2Paddle Yesterday night, me and Connie returned back to Colorado from the 4th Missouri River 340 Race. 272 boats entered the race. The start was little different this year due to morning thunderstorm with heavy showers. Otherwise, the weather was great with beautiful full moon nights.

I paddled Surfrigger, my outrigger canoe and completed the race in 61:11 hours, a few hours longer than planned.

Packing for the race I found a contact sheet for the first MR340 in 2006 - contacts to organizers, all racers and their support crew were listed just on one page with some blank space left. 15 boats in 2006 and nearly 300 in 2009.

I also found that my list of checkpoints with mileage is printed in much bigger font now than 4 years ago.

Fit2Paddle I paddled 5 of recent Colorado River races (10 miles in Glenwood Canyon): 2002 (CLC Patuxent 19.5 kayak), 2004 and 2005 (Sisson Nucleus 100 kayak), 2006 and 2007 (WSBS Thunderbolt-X kayak). I always tried to shoot some pictures before and after the race. Here is a slide show:
