"Here & There"
Set in both New York and Belgrade, this dramedy from Writer/director Darko Lungulov is built upon a dangerously-close-to-formulaic premise that quickly blazes a unique path. Archetypal New Yorker Robert (David Thornton) is a down-on-his-luck, cynical and jaded 52-year-old sax player with Ratso Rizzo bravado (replete with "I'm walkin' here!" moment) and a permanently unkempt mane of black hair and three-day stubble. Kicked out of his apartment, he meets Serbian man-with-van Branko, who soon offers our disheveled hero a chance to earn $5000 by marrying his fiancée in Belgrade, and bringing her back to America. Robert hops a plane to Belgrade and is deposited at the apartment of Olga, Branko's gracious and comely mother. While Branko tries desperately to scrape together the rest of the money in New York, Robert finds Olga's company revitalizing.

Lungulov found inspiration for the film after as mover in New Yprk City, according to an indieWIRE interview:

“The story of “Here and There” is loosely based on my 5-year stint as a “man with a van” in NYC. While studying film at City College of New York I supported myself driving a van and carrying boxes and furniture every day before and after film classes. Every time my beeper would go off, I would run out of class to make a phone call to my prospective clients. My professors and fellow students thought I was a drug dealer.

“I entered many people’s lives as 'move'” in New York City. I always knew that this could be a good base for a story. In 2003, I returned to live in Serbia. Soon enough, I learned about the harsh reality of daily life of this “country in transition.” Even though all the wars ended, nearly all the young people there were still longing to live somewhere else. At same time, I remember how I longed to be back in Serbia. That irony inspired me to write ‘Here And There.’”

David Thornton, in the lead role of Robert, is best known for ‘Civil Action’ (costars with John Travolta), and for TV Show ‘Law and Order’ and roles in Nick Cassavetes’ films ‘John Q’ (with Denzel Washington), “The Notebook”. and “Sister’s Keeper” .
Thorton’s wife, award-winning artist Cyndi Lauper, makes a special appearance in the film and contributes and an original song to the soundtrack.

Both Lungulov and Thorton are scheduled to attend the screening.

The film won recently won awards for Best New Filmmaker and Best New York Narrative at Tribeca Film Film Festival.

Reviews:

“‘Here and There,’ a deadpan romantic comedy by Serbian director Darko Lungulov defy genre pigeonholing...The picture takes small, surprising turns that remind you how much a director can accomplish with little more than an original sensibility and some fine actors. David Thornton, playing a character whose alienation from the world sometimes borders on autism, anchors the movie through the subtlest of means – even his haystack haircut has things to tell us. For reasons almost entirely mercurial, it’s a mesmerizing performance.” - MTV

“Here and There represents the best kind of indie filmmaking—it takes a modest but timeless premise and builds something from it that is quietly remarkable, a story both reaffirming and fresh in its message about what it means to be human.” - Firefox news

“Laid-back character study accrues small epiphanies with patient care, its mordant Eastern European humor tempered by a gentler sense of postwar absurdity...Slight, extremely likable pic, a sly variant on recent immigrant movies like "The Visitor". - Variety

“Writer/director Darko Lungulov examines the feeling of being a fish out of water in both his home country of Serbia and his adopted New York, where he lived for more than a decade. Lungulov balances two tones in his two storylines—the breath-of-fresh-air sensation in Serbia plays even stronger against the endless frustrating setbacks in New York. Being in chaotic Belgrade is a shot in the arm for a cynical, seen-it-all New Yorker, and actor David Thornton has Robert evolve physically from scruffy and sunken to more clean-cut and pert during the course of his stay. As Branko, meanwhile, Branislav Trifunovic embodies the mix of hope and fear that fills an immigrant trying to carve out his place in a new land.” - Tibeca Film Festival

Tickets for the film are $10 and can be purchased at the Cinema Paradiso box office or online (see link below).
