Free-Ed.Net Our volunteers for 2009 have just received their medals and letter of appreciation from President Obama. Free-Ed.Net is a Certifying Volunteer Organization for the President's Volunteer Service Award program. Watch for our volunteer recruiting program for 2010 -- those letters from the prez of the USA look good in a job resume portfolo.

Lifelong learning is becoming an essential element of advanced world cultures. With the merging of TV and the Internet, learning will become as common in daily living as entertaiment is now. Learning will take place everyday, often in bits and pieces. We'll be able to pick and choose the learning bytes that suit us at ...the moment. Mark this down. It IS going to happen -- before 2020, and probably sooner than later.Więcej...

Free-Ed.Net We are looking at the possibility of building motivational videos into the Free-Ed.Net system. One of the most significant barriers to becoming better educated is one's own personal inertia. Like a weight-loss diet, education often start with great enthusiasm and verifiable results, but soon fades and becomes another ... well, failure. A series of motivational videos would help.

Free-Ed.Net Facebook groups are going to play a major role in carrying Free-Ed.Net to its next level of achievement. We have experimented with a couple of regular pages (such as this one), but Groups will offer more of what we need -- all members can start a discussion, for example. Watch for some announcements about the launch of new Facebook groups for various subjects and study programs.

Free-Ed.Net We have finally decided on a Study Buddy platform for Free-Ed.Net. We will be using Skype because of its wide global use, simplicity, and proven track record for text, voice, and video. A special thanks to those Friends who helped me decide about Google Talk earlier today.

With Skype you can make free calls over the internet to other people on Skype for as long as you like, to wherever you like. It is free to download. You can also call landlines and mobiles at great rates.

Free-Ed.Net Software giant, Microsoft, is learning about something we have known at Free-Ed.Net for years. They are closing down the online encyclopedia, Encarta, at the end of October because " People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past." Free-Ed.Net IS different. Think of it as education with an "attitude."

Free-Ed.Net I am looking for volunteers who can spend at least 15 minutes each day helping our GED students understand how our system works. GED mentors must be high school grads or have a GED. They must also possess a great deal of patience and social skills for guiding people with a vast range of abilities and outlooks on life. Use any "comment" link on Free-Ed.Net to contact me.

Free-Ed.Net Sometimes I can't believe how Free-Ed.Net is reaching into the world. Today I got an email from a police officer in Uganda. He is currently serving in the Sudan as part of the UN forces. He wants to pursue international law and peacekeeping at our school. Our offerings are very thin in that area, but obviously the need exists.

Free-Ed.Net October was a busy month for learners at Free-Ed.Net. There were 165,000 unique visitors (repeat visits not counted) who viewed 1,070,000 pages of course material. The most popoular courses were Pre-Algebra, Medical Terminology, and Human Anatomy & Physiology. Free-Ed.Net is ranked in the 50th percentile (right in the middle) of popularity of all websites in the world.

Free-Ed.Net We are going to be recruiting volunteers to manage the load of new learners who are relying on Free-Ed.Net. We need moderators for the GED classes, people to proofread course materials and check navigation links, and a graphic artist to clean up line art for some key courses. Interested? Email daveh@free-ed.net. More later about the volunteers award program.

Free-Ed.Net The number of learners visiting Free-Ed.Net is skyrocketing this fall. The 5-year-old web navigation system has been straining under the load. Sooooo. We are spending most of our time on a navigation rebuild -- total ... across the board. Users will be more readily able to find the subjects and features they want. (Not to mention some fabulous new features I will mention later).

Free-Ed.Net It seems that Web surfers tend to ignore a lot of text (instructions, in our case), but will watch a video. So I am spending most of this holiday outlining storyboards for a series of 1-min videos. It would certainly liven up the site. Any comments?

Thanks, Kristal. I will definitely give that idea some thought. It is certainly simpler than making videos.

Free-Ed.Net There is an article in USA Today about the college-age generation getting wary of the cost vs. benefits of higher education today. Free-Ed.Net is well positioned to assist people in maximizing their education opportunities and propping open the door for long-term payoffs. This is the new century -- the digital age. We have spend over a decade been building for this time... the excitement is just beginning.

Darla Horn, 26, acknowledges she didn't give much thought to the cost of college when she enrolled at State University of New York in Purchase.

Free-Ed.Net I am taking a close look at the GED & College Prep program. The current version is four years old, and a lot of technology has happened during that time. We are signing nearly 400 new GED clients each month ... up substantially from last year at this time. Updating the program is a huge undertaking, but probably worth it.
