Okay. Forgive me for that perfectly predictable pun. But if you write fiction and feel particularly ambitious this fine day, Stanford University is hiring a fiction writer. So, dust off the CV, turn off the Pantera Behind the Music on Youtube, and get your application in by December 4, 2009...

This is an actual, hand-written comment we found on an author's cover letter last week...

Ha ha ha--we skimmed ours at Bayou since we had to weed out UNO alums. We kept the really ridiculous ones in a binder in the office for humor. My faves? The lady who gave us her life story in four paragraphs (which made me kind of sad) INCLUDING her miscarriages and info on her writing club (complete with days and times they meet and average ... See Moreattendance) and the guy who referred to his poems as "orphans." I also liked the ones from doctors that had to tell you what kind of medicine they practiced and where they practiced it.

We never cared where they were published, we just paid attention to the story. It was a great learning experience. My cover letters now are barely a paragraph unless I'm feeling silly.

Yes. I stopped reading them at the Sonora Review because there was invariably a direct inverse correlation between the shiny bangles on the cover letter and the uninspiring writing. It is almost insulting, as if they are kicking their scraps from the cutting-room floor to you, and hoping that you'll let them skate in based on past performance. I admit that I particularly enjoy those rejections...

That's weird. When I, Matt Roberts, post a comment here it attributes it to the magazine. Hmmm. Must remember to use this power wisely.
