Friends of the Smith College Libraries Neilson Library opened on the Monday after Thanksgiving in 1909. Enjoy period refreshments and music provided by Mando Mucho, a local mandolin and guitar ensemble, playing classical and popular music of the early 1900s.

Eszter Hargittai, Smith College Class of 1996, will discuss her research into skill differences and the digital-social divide in Internet use among students. Hargittai is Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Northwestern University where she heads the Web Use Project. She received a Ph.D. in Sociology from P...rinceton University in 2003. Her dissertation, “How Wide a Web? Inequalities in Accessing Information Online” won the National Communication Association’s G.R. Miller Dissertation Award in 2004. Hargittai continues to conduct research on the Internet and the social and policy implications of information technologies. She has also studied the evolution of search engines and the organization and presentation of online content, political uses of information technologies, and how IT are influencing the types of cultural products people consume. There is a financial plan that will move the Josten Library collection into Neilson Library, and lay off three of the four staff.
