Futurism

Futurism is now a fan of Umberto Boccioni.

Umberto Boccioni was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, in 1882. He studied art and design in Rome, Venice ad Paris. Student of Giacomo Balla and friend of futurist poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, he is one of the main theorists of the Italian artistic movement of futurism... and is particularly famous for his sculpture "Unique Forms of Continuity in Space".

F.T. Marinetti wrote the Futurist Manifesto. Boccioni wrote something called the "Technical Manifesto of Futurist Sculpture."

Now THIS is more like a genuine Marinetti performance rant than anything I've seen in a while. Italian-accented English, too. Bravo!

Llikyour Idols On 30. 06. 1911 Boccioni, Marinetti and Carra hit Soffici because of his criticism about their exhibition in Padiglioni. That's so buggy :)

Tanya Exhibition was amazing but was disappointed not to see the violinist's movement (I think that's what it's called) as I was told by the Estorick that that's where it had gone to :(

Great to hear the exhibition turned out well. What's that 'violinist's movement' you missed? Google yields nothing of use..

Yeah, I REALLY do wish I could go, but sadly I'm on the wrong side of the pond. The best I've been able to do this Spring is see the very small centenial commemorative exhibition on written Futurist material that was at MOMA.

But I did read the English version of the exhibition catalogue the other week and it is quite a stunning exhibition. It is... See More a bit short on the non-painting works (notably in sculpture), but that media always was its strongest point. So I'd highly encourage anyone in Rome who hasn't seen it to do so this week, since it's only there for another week I think. And anyone in the UK or other nearby countries to see it on your next trip to London this summer.

Despite the reactionary politics, probably my favorite modern (i.e. pre-war) avant garde movement visually. I wish I could see the centenary exhibition touring Paris, Rome and London right now. And the Russian wing of the movement is gorgeous also!

The one at Tate in London is just about to start and looks very promising. If you know a good online resource on Russian futurism, then don't hesitate to post it.
