GM Virtual Stockholders' Meeting
U.S. and Canadian taxpayers funded the bailout of General Motors. Shouldn’t the new majority owners, therefore, have a voice in the business?

GM Virtual Stockholders' Meeting
I often get into discussions with folks about cars. My position being that we really need to reduce car use by public transportation, community redesign, or just not driving. And the push back I get is that Americans, true Americans, love their cars too much to part with them even for a second...

GM Virtual Stockholders' Meeting http://greenopolis.com/myopolis/blogs/bobferris/volt-versus-prius-driven-economics My take on the below CNN article. Money is not the only factor in a decision.

Before you rush out to buy one when the Chevrolet Volt hits dealer showrooms next year, consider your options. It's likely that gas-only or hybrid cars will be the cheaper way to go.

I agree with you. Money is not the only issue. The article appears to be a poorly though out analysis by a lazy reporter.

Walking is actually the least expensive option, and if folks would live closer to their workplaces, this discussion could become less important. I predict that several people will immediately jump up to say that it is not possible to change our driving habits because we have been doing things this way for so long. Tell me again why we cannot use our legs to go places.

Perry you are absolutely correct. When walking and reliable mass transit are options, the cars sit idle. Mine has been resting for nearly two weeks and shoes and Metro card have been getting a workout.

GM's Volt supposedly still on track for release in fall 2010, will be electric car with added on small (relatively efficient) gas motor to recharge big batteries after first 60 or so miles on electric only.
So: can be both the short trip/2nd car of an full EV and the cross-country car too.

GM Virtual Stockholders' Meeting The rapid draining of the "Cash for Clunkers" program indicates that the American public, inspite of what automakers say, wants cars that get better gas mileage.

GM Virtual Stockholders' Meeting It is interesting to see the comments on this site, but at times even more interesting to see the comments on GMs own fan page

Pay particular attention to the contrast of the sunny comments on the GM moderated wall versus those in the discussion section.

A lot is happening at General Motors and we couldn’t be more excited. For us, change means improvement, which is why we’re eagerly getting down to the business of restructuring, to build a better company. At General Motors, we’re reinventing our vehicles, our company and our place in the world.
