GRuB
Beloved GRuB Fans and Advocates,
Fall is upon us again, slowing things down, reminding us to celebrate, reminding us to reflect, reminding us to appreciate the success, opportunities, and challenges of this past year. As I write this, it is hard not to be inspired by GRuB’s work in 2009. An incredible, expanded youth ...employment program that included the mentorship of a GRuB-like organization in Lewis County; thriving, full community gardens at Sunrise Park, Evergreen Vista, and in Rochester; record food production on our small farm feeding hundreds of families – all highlights from this past year. We are thankful to all of our incredible partners whose work with us fueled real change in our community. We extend much gratitude to the Thurston County Food Bank, Left-Foot Organics, ROOF, the Olympia Parks Department, and Community Youth Services for their stellar support.
I am also inspired as I look ahead. Imagine a community where GRuB wasn’t the only place youth could find employment engaging with local hunger and poverty issues. Imagine GRuB-style youth crews throughout our region working on food bank sponsored gleaning projects, secured organic farms, and neighborhood-run community gardens. Imagine a food bank flooded with fresh local produce. Imagine an abundance of empowering opportunities for families of all incomes to grow their own food and support local farms. Imagine a hunger free community. That future is possible.
We are in an exciting time right now. Demand for our work has never been higher, from families requesting backyard gardens to communities looking to adopt our employment program model for their own youth; the opportunities are compelling and real. Strong partners are aligning with us to move this vision forward. Even amidst fear of scarcity and hard economic times, we are striving to be bold and creative. Our 2010 efforts include hosting trainings on starting community gardens and establishing agriculture-based youth employment programs. Youth program activities will expand further in collaboration with groups such as Safeplace, Junior League of Olympia, and the Olympia School District.
As I write this, I also realize many of you may have just received our annual fall mailer. As you are well aware, meeting our vision will take money. As part of our fall fundraising efforts, we are submitting quality proposals to private foundations, we are re-applying for a 3-year Community Food Project grant from the USDA (a federal stream of money that has supported a chunk of our work for the past 3 years), and through expanded consultative work, we foresee new streams of earned income to diversify us further.
We also need the meaningful support of individuals and families in our community. This is where you come in. I invite you to consider contributing a meaningful gift to GRuB right now. Your community donations support the heart of our work. Local donations support employment opportunities for youth who are deemed “too at-risk” by federal and state standards or who aren’t quite poor enough, it supports garden builds for families in rural areas where government support has dried up, it supports innovative work that is responsive to emerging community needs and opportunities. Your gifts matter. I hope you’ll join us for another year of incredible work!
