Gainesville Scottish Country Dance Society Greetings, Hoggetowne Medieval Faire Friends! Thanks so much for dancing with us out at the maypole! If you enjoyed yourself, we hope you'll consider coming to our classes each Tuesday. We meet at the home of Norma Wilson and Mike Randall on Williston Road -- and we're always glad to welcome new friends. Directions are... in the "about us" box to your left -- please come out and see us!

Greetings all! Summer is over, and there's lots going on with the Gainesville Scottish Country Dance Society. First off, we have a new location! The old GDMA building on University Avenue is being refurbished into a museum, so we've moved next door to the Acrosstown Repertoire Theatre...

Please join us for the 2009 Fall Workshop and Ball Nov. 13-15 at the Keene Faculty Center on the University of Florida campus...

Wondering what Scottish Country Dancing is?
It's two lines of people -- men on one side, ladies on the other -- dancing in set patterns. Many of the dances date to the 1700s and 1800s -- Jane Austen probably would have been familiar with the figures.
It's men in kilts dancing with dressed up ladies, flirting and laughing... as they go. Dating as we know it wouldn't have been done back in the old days -- instead, you went to a local ball and danced in a structured environment. The time shared on the dance floor was often your best chance at getting to know someone and spend time with him or her.
It's fun and exercise and socializing all rolled into one.
We don't do this to make money. We charge only enough to cover the monthly rent of our dance facility. This is our social outlet. We do this for fun. Classes last roughly two hours, then we're off to The Top for dinner and more laughter.
Please come join us some Tuesday!

A few years ago, I was at a dance event here in Gainesville when I first heard about Scottish Country Dancing. I had tried English Country Dancing and was new to Contra dancing -- I heard if I wanted a real challenge, Scottish was the way to go. It turned out that SCD was the dance for me...
