2009 MUNICIPAL GENERAL ELECTION
In accordance with provisions of the Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Elections Act and Municipalities Act, general elections will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, for the office of Mayor and the six seats comprising the Town Council of the Town of Gander.
The positions of Mayor ...and Councillor are filled through separate at-large elections, meaning that each person elected represents the Town as a whole and not a particular ward or section of the Town. Once the election is held and the results confirmed, there is an election held by secret ballot during the first meeting of the new Council to elect the Deputy Mayor. The first meeting of the new Council is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2.
Nominations for the offices of Mayor or Councillor will be accepted 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. September 1-4, 2009. If you are a registered voter but will be unable to cast your ballot on Election Day, an Advance Poll is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009, or you may vote by proxy.
Click the links at left for election details, including the roles and responsibilities of elected municipal officials, the nomination process and voting eligibility and procedures. Once polling booths have closed on September 29, poll by poll results will be posted as the ballots are counted.
For information not included in these pages, or for assistance on any election-related matter, please contact Town of Gander Returning Officer Garry Brown by telephone at 709-651-5901 or by emailing gbrown@gandercanada.com; or Alternate Returning Officer Ashley O'Brien at 709-651-5902 or aobrien@gandercanada.com.
The election process is the cornerstone of democracy. The strength and effectiveness of government is tied directly to the level of participation by the voting public. Just as a low voter turnout invites weak leadership and poor or biased decision-making, full participation ensures that you are both heard and respected, and that the quality of life we've worked so hard to achieve is protected and enhanced.
On Election Day, your voice is as strong as the richest and most powerful among us. Please make it count!
Come out and Vote!
