Getting Sh-t Done Just noticed that it's possible to turn off the 'new mail' indicator on the Apple Mail dock icon - so it no longer lures me in with it's siren song of new emails and I can GSD instead.

why not just quit mail?

Rohn Blake By happy accident I found a Miquelrius grid notebook at a local art supply store.
Need to accomplish some personal goals and hoping the "permanence" of ink on paper will hold me accountable to my dreams.

Getting Sh-t Done

Getting Sh-t Done Digital devices have a way of slowly encroaching on your life. Like watching a small child grow, you never really notice it until all of a sudden one day you realize just how much things have changed. That's what just happened here at GSD central. So last weekend I unplugged the big monitor, put all the wires and stuff in a drawer, pushed the laptop into a corner, and got out my notebook. Ahhhh.

Getting Sh-t Done New tip: I was getting distracted by all of the *stuff* on my computer, so I created a new user (called it "Work") and left it absolutely pristine (didn't configure or tweek anything, didn't install Twitter or IM, nothing). Now when I need to really GSD, I log into my computer as Work.

Brian Green

Brian Green Been a huge fan for years now, great to see this being shared and becoming, dare I say it, mainstream! This basic system, if we really call it that or rather a group of best practices, has served me well. One adaptation that I've made over time is to use a red pen for personal items and a black one for work instead of starting from the bottom of the page for personal. I find that gives me a little more flexibility and helps the personal stuff stand out especially when the two started to meet in the middle of the page. Here's a pic of my Miquelrius notebook.

James Yasha Cunningham I've just joined this cult and I am a believer! I started my morning by writing out my second Daily List and I'm looking forward to checking off some boxes today. For me, using the 300-page Miquelrius notebook is an important part of the system. It has the heft of a brick. It feels substantial, serious, welcoming.

Getting Sh-t Done Lately I've been playing with the LiveScribe, which was a holiday gift from my wife. The GSD approach is the same, and it uses a similar notebook, but it captures a digital copy of what you're writing, right into the pen. Then you can later upload the digital ink to the computer, where you can look at it, search it, and print it. Pretty cool, although I'm not as happy with the quality of the paper and ink.

Getting Sh-t Done Yup, I use the 6 x 8 version; I had been carrying the thicker version (300-400 pages?) but have recently started thinking about the slimmer one ... or maybe another brand entirely

Charles Crotts Jr The only Miquelrius notebooks I can find around here (North Carolina) are very big ones at Barnes and Noble so I am using Moleskines at the moment. Anyone got suggestions as to where to buy the smaller sizes? The company website kind of stinks.

Getting Sh-t Done Hey Arif. My Master List is usually a couple of pages long, but it expands and contracts depending on how busy I am. I don't reserve space for it in the book, but rather whenever it gets too big, I just move it forward (by copying the items) into fresh pages in the book. It's time-consuming, but forces me to rethink whether or not the Master List items are still relevant. Emergent things usually go on the Daily List, unless I know for sure that I won't be dealing with them anytime soon.
Cheers - Bill

Arif Okay, I have a question, on your website you don't really say much about the Master List. Is the Master List constantly expanding? How many pages should I reserve for my master list, if there are emergent things to be done do they go on the Master list or the Daily List?
