Gilmer Dairy Farm We expect to finish chopping the sorghum on our "hill ground" this morning and will then seal off our primary silage pit. The quality looks to be better than we anticipated, but our yields have been far below what we had hoped for.

Gilmer Dairy Farm We were only 75 feet away from finishing the harvest in the field shown in yesterday's MooTube Minute (#009) when one of the silage chopper's chains jumped off. We'll finish up there and move into our final terraced field within the hour.

Gilmer Dairy Farm Someone who we suspect is opposed to dairy farming has left several negative comments on our MooTube Minute #004 and has zero-rated ALL of our videos. I guess that means we're doing something right!!! BTW, you can visit our YouTube Channel and rank any of our videos 0-5 stars, comment on any of them, or give a thumbs up/down to other people's comments. Gilmer Dairy Farm Our silage harvest rolls on...two rows at a time! Learn more in our latest GDF MooTube Minute!

Gilmer Dairy Farm If all goes well we'll chop another 10 acres of sorghum today. David and two of our workers will attend to the harvest while Will and another worker will busy themselves with various jobs around the farm this morning.

Gilmer Dairy Farm We expect to resume our sorghum harvest this morning. If we can avoid any major mechanical problems, we should be able to finish all of our "hill" ground this week. It remains to be seen if we will be able to harvest any of the 45 acres of sorghum we planted in our Yellow Creek bottom fields.

Gilmer Dairy Farm Yesterday's great weather gave us the opportunity to sort and move some dry cows and heifers, catch up on some maintenance, and even apply some dairy slurry as fertilizer to one of our vacant pastures. You can learn more about it in a new MooTube Minute we posted!

Beautiful weather, sorting cows, and applying a little Water 'n Poo...all in the latest MooTube Minute!

Gilmer Dairy Farm The forecast is calling for great weather this week. We plan on doing a few repairs and spreading a little "water 'n poo" today to give the sorghum fields one more day to dry out, then we expect to start harvesting again tomorrow. Of course, we'll still be milking and feeding each day the same as we've done everyday for the past 55+ years.

Gilmer Dairy Farm We have got to get the radio in our feed tractor fixed!

Gilmer Dairy Farm We dried off 6 pregnant milking cows yesterday morning and will do the same with 9 more today. This will leave us with 166 milking cows and 55 dry cows, which is the lowest percentage of our herd "in milk" in quite some time.

Gilmer Dairy Farm Yesterday morning our dry cows and heifers were squaring off for a showdown. Learn more about it by reading the linked blog post.

Around the middle of yesterday morning, just as I was finishing up some county Farm Bureau paperwork in my farm office, my phone rang. "Someone stopped by and said we have cows in the road on the other side of the creek," said my father on the other end. "We're heading that way, meet us over there."

Gilmer Dairy Farm It took less than a load to decide that our sorghum fields are still too slick to operate in today. Hopefully we can resume chopping tomorrow before the next rain system moves in.

Gilmer Dairy Farm We measured our cows' milk production and collected samples from them this morning. You can learn a little more about in in our most recent MooTube Minute video.

Gilmer Dairy Farm Rain will keep us out of the field today, but we'll find plenty of fix-it work to do this morning in our shop before we milk the cows again this afternoon.
