Girls Inc. of Chattanooga Blast Off! was a smashing success!! Thank you all. Looking forward to seeing those who came and those who missed the event and our featured "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grade Girl?" next year. Start planning to attend 'Unbought and Unbossed' on April 20, 2010. Nomination applications for candidates are due out soon.

Are Senator Andy Berke and Superintendant Jim Scales smarter than a fifth grade girl? Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga will pit prominent Chattanoogans in a school knowledge challenge against 5th grade Girls Inc. girls as part of the 5th annual Blast Off! fall fundraiser and silent auction held at The Mill on October ...9 from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Based on the popular television game show, contestants will test their knowledge from standard fifth grade curriculums and compete against fifth grade Girls Inc. girls to win the game. “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grade Girl” also will feature Pete Cooper, President of the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga and Edna Varner, Senior Consultant at the Public Education Foundation. Additional contestants are being recruited for the event.
Blast Off! celebrates girls in science, technology, engineering and math and demonstrates Girls Inc.’s commitment to narrowing the gender gap for girls in these fields. Blast Off! is the principal annual fundraising event for Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga and also features girls conducting science experiments with guests and a silent auction. Heavy hors d’oeuvres donated from local food purveyors and an open wine and beer bar will be available to guests. All proceeds will support Girls Inc. programs serving girls ages 6-18 in Hamilton County.
Tickets are $50 per person or $90 per couple. Sponsorships are still available and start at $250.

Demonstrating that it’s never too early to start advocating against violence, fourth and fifth grade girls participating in the Girls Inc. after-school program at Hardy Elementary School will hold a Project BOLD® showcase this Friday, May 8, from 4-5:30 p.m. at Hardy Elementary. Friday’s showcase will feature an advoca...cy project and a tae kwon do presentation.
Throughout the spring, girls have participated in the Girls Inc. national Project BOLD® curriculum, which teaches girls to lead safer lives by developing skills and strategies for self-defense. Through this program, girls learn how to seek out and talk to a caring adult about personal violence and advocate against gender-specific violence.
Funded through a Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the girls have taken tae kwon do lessons, discussed violence in their community and created an advocacy project, which they will deliver at the Project BOLD® showcase on May 8.
The Hardy Elementary program also partnered with the Girls Inc. Leadership Team, which spent the 2009-2010 year focusing on gang violence. This teen group will conducted an age-appropriate activity on different types of violence with the fourth and fifth grade girls and will speak at the showcase on Friday.
