Venice, Brooklyn was a shotgun multimedia improvisation assembled and performed by the Glass Bees on September 20, 2009. Early that morning, Jason Das and I traveled to areas along the Atlantic coastline in southern Brooklyn, specifically visiting neighborhoods and marshland...

Glass Bees
The Glass Bees are excited to report that we've been accepted into the sixth annual Conflux Festival! (See: http://confluxfestival.org/2009/events/conflux-city/ ) The festival is a New York City-wide gathering of visual and sound artists, writers, urban adventurers, and the public, created to “investigate everyday urba...n life through emerging artistic, technological, and social practice.” Yes, it's high concept.

Our participation will begin early on the morning of Sunday, September 20, when Jason and Chris will explore neighborhoods near the coastline of southeastern Brooklyn, documenting them with sound recorders, photographs, and video, and collecting distinctive found objects. We're particularly interested in these areas because they have been identified as being vulnerable to more severe storms and rising seas in the coming decades. Think New Orleans. Think Venice. Think Bangladesh. What would be lost in a disaster, we wonder, and how are people preparing?

The sounds, images, and resonant objects we capture will become raw material for a shotgun improvised multimedia performance we will present later that same day. We don't quite know how this will turn out, so please join us to see what happens!

THIS IS A FREE SHOW!

with very special guest … BLEVIN BLECTUM!

Blevin is an electronic musician who has released many highly regarded recordings. She i...s also 1/2 of the groundbreaking digital duo Blectum From Blechdom who, in addition to having pretty much the greatest band name ever, won the 2001 Ars Electronica Award of Distinction in Digital Musics for their album “The Messy Jesse Fiesta.” This is like winning a Pulitzer Prize for Electronic Music, folks.

We are so thrilled that Blevin has agreed to make the trip down from weirdbeat Providence, RI, and that this will be happening in a central but off-the-beaten-path venue. Envoy is a contemporary art space with a gallery and a bar. The evening should be nice and intimate, and we’re hoping there will be time for a Bees vs. Blectum collaboration.
