Global Edmonton Wins Four RTNDA Awards!

Global Edmonton is #1 with viewers across northern Alberta, and now we've been recognized by our peers for excellence in news coverage.

This past Saturday, the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) bestowed four prestigious Prairie Regional Awards on Global Edmonton.

The award for Best Short Feature went to Su-Ling Goh for her touching story about an Edmonton family's struggle to deal with the loss of one of their twin baby boys.

Global Edmonton also captured top honours in the Long Feature category for our half-hour special Black Friday: 20 Years Later - a look back at the 1987 tornado that devastated Alberta's capital, and the lasting effect it had on survivors and victims' families.

We also won in the Best Continuing Coverage category for our initial and followup coverage of July 2007's massive fire in the MacEwan neighbourhood in south Edmonton.

And our Bob Layton received Best Editorial honours for his take on Edmonton's new city council.

Global Edmonton also received an Honourable Mention for our live coverage of November 2007's charity harness race at Northlands featuring our own Lynda Steele and Gord Steinke.

RTNDA Canada represents Canada's electronic journalists. It is made up of over 400 news directors, reporters, producers, educators, students and industry associates across the country.

I agree with Jennifer and Jana (about the police officer, Douglas Brown)...Is it just me or does it seem to be that the police dept. is minimizing his actions. Saying okay, you screwed up, but we will just give you a time out and then itll be back to normal....Has this guy not heard the advertisements about driving under the influence...how many tickets has he handed out to impaired drivers.???
An impaired driver is exactly that. No matter what your status.
He should not be paid under any circumstances. He should have jail time, and a hefty fine.
He is just a guy, who couldnt follow the rules. And by him drinking and driving made him a very lousy citizen.
My thoughts are with the youg kid who is now not only afraid to drive, but will probably never have faith in the so-called justice system, or police officers for that matter.
There are many people out there who will GLADLY take this cops place. And do their job ON DUTY AND OFF DUTY!

Health Care Reform:
perhaps it will be better is the top is trimmed so that the salaries are paid to people who actually are front line workers...Too many companies, and organizations get too top heavy and then do not function well. If they run it as before, then we gain nothing. If there is a large buy out of salaries, we loose again...so caution must be used.
one thing we should be doing is offer student loans with strings so that people that we through our tax dollars have educated (student fees do not cover all costs of education) will be obligated to work in Alberta for a reasonable amount of time as part of that loan. This has been done in the past with counties paying education costs or a portion there of for Teachers....This with fast tracking foreign education medical professionals will aid us all. They may be able to help us repair some of our industry health problems with their input.
