Everyone plays a critical role in achieving global health equity! Students involved with GlobeMed:
• Lead Campaigns on campus to generate funds and resources for collaborative projects with our partner organization
• Organize and participate in globalhealthU, a student-designed educational curriculum, where we learn about global health issues and how we can incorporate sustainable solutions into our project efforts.
• Participate in an on-site program, traveling to our partner organization to work on projects and learn from local leaders.
OUR PARTNER
Name: AMOS Salud y Esperanza (A Ministry of Sharing Health and Hope)
Location: Based in Managua, AMOS serves the rural areas of Boaco, Chinandega, and the Northern Atlantic Autonomous Region of Nicaragua (RAAN)
Key Fact: Over 50% of Nicaragua’s rural areas lack access to health care and essential medicines
Partner Overview: The lack of access to health care causes problems not only in cases of medical emergency but also contributes to the high incidence of preventable disease. Established in 2006, AMOS is a non-profit, grassroots, organization that helps prevent death and disease by equipping communities in rural Nicaragua with the tools they need to reach out to their most vulnerable populations. To ensure coverage of each community’s entire population, AMOS works with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health to develop a primary health care system that combines traditional clinical services with community-based health promotion and disease prevention.
AMOS has currently empowered 20 community health workers , or health promoters, to:
-Run their own community clinics
-Treat and prevent common illnesses
-Promote healthy habits such as hand-washing, good hygiene, and breast-feeding for infants
-Monitor children’s growth to detect and treat malnutrition
-Provide basic essential medicines
Impact: Through its Rural Health Care Program, AMOS has helped 20 communities (12,000 people) achieve access to effective and empowering health care. You can be a part of this impact!
