Goethe-Institut Hanoi 60 years of German cinema
1949-1958

Free tickets are available at the Goethe-Institut, tel: 37342251/52/53 (Ext. 9), email: info@hanoi.goethe.org

German cinema has gone though remarkable milestones since the Second World War, for which the German Year in Vietnam is a retrospective opportunity. We will introduce every two ...months a series of German films made in the 1940-50s, including the most typical works that reflect German life and lifestyles. These works were both shocking and inspiring for viewers at their time, and play a path finding role for both East and West German cinema industries.

Between yesterday and tomorrow (1947)
Director: Harald Braun, 107mins
In 1947, after the wave of destruction and dispel in Europe, Michael, a caricaturist, returns to his homeland in Germany. However, his old friends in Munich do not want to have anything to do with him. He is then accused for being associated with a theft and a suicide in the past. Throughout his fight for justice, Kat (by Hildegard Knef) is the only one who takes side with him. It is the smart, decisive, alerted and even cunning girl that helps Michael find his life back.

The lost one (1951)
Director: Peter Lorre, 95 mins
Finding out that his fiancée is spying on him, the renowned medical doctor Klaus Rothe loses his control and kills her. He regrets much for that, and expects punishment. However, the Nazis cover this crime because they need him for their work. Haunted by fear and paranoid, Rothe becomes a serial killer. Yet, under a regime where death is a daily scene, nobody cares what Rothe is doing. „The lost one“ is an impressive film that deals with individual and collective regret, a post-war painful feeling in Germany.

Women’s destiny (1952)
Director: Slatan Dudow, 104 mins
Four women are up to a new beginning, looking for their happiness in post-war Berlin. One after another, they meet Conny, a handsome womanizer who always seeks new love affairs. The young student Barbara is deeply in love with Conny, while Anni gets pregnant with him, and Renate becomes a thief out of her mad love towards him. Conny, however, chooses to couple with aristocrat Isa von Trauwald and enjoys the luxurious life of the high society, which makes the situation even more thrilling …Dodow’s 1952 „Women’s destiny“ hit the box offices of cinemas in Germany at its time.

Sky without stars (1955)
Director: Helmut Käutner, 108 mins
Germany of 1952 is prior to the Berlin war. Anna lives in the Eastern part, while her son lives with his grandparents in the West. She regularly secretly passes the border to visit him, and during her trips, she gets to know a border guard. They then fall in deep love. However, the only chance for them to see each other is at fallow train station. The story developed into a tragedy, like a denouncement of the unnatural border line that tears Germany apart. „Sky without stars“ has received many German and international cinema awards.

The hooligans (1956)
Director: Georg Tressler, 97 mins
Freddy cannot stand his parents’ harsh and obsolete lifestyle, as well as the father’s oppression any more, so he runs away. He wanders about and becomes the leader of a group of young people who want to fight back against their parents’ harsh petite bourgeoisie Nazis lifestyle. “The hooligans” get stuck more and more deeply in crimes, and an unsuccessful robbery ends in disaster. “The hooligans” reflects young people’s rebellion in 1950’s Germany, similar to James Dean in American classic “Rebel without a Cause”.

Berlin, Schönhauser Street (1957)
Director: Gerhard Klein, 80 mins
The underground crossroads of Schönhauser Allee in East Berlin is where a group of young people who are bored with living at home gather. They cannot stand their fathers‘ violence and family conflicts. They are there together to kill time, muck around and defy one another. One of them, Karl-Heinz, born to a decent family, gets stuck in criminal business for quick money at the western Zoo station. He gets his two friends Dieter and Kohle involved, and as their crime is revealed, they have no choice but to flee to West Berlin for good. Finally, only one of them gets disillusioned and returns to East Berlin to build a new honest life, while the other two’s destiny becomes tragic…

Different from me and you (1957)
Director: Veit Harlan, 90 mins
Klaus Teichmann’s parents are worried: they have been seeing their son hang about with gays and become more and more attached to a group of artists, where Klaus himself makes his own artistic works. Klaus‘ close friend Boris is particularly an offence. Therefore, not knowing anything about Boris, Mr. Teichmann sends a anonymous accusation letter against him and creates a scandal. Mrs. Teichman, on the other hand, tries her best to be a match maker for her son with young beautiful Gerda. As soon as Klaus starts to feel for Gerda, the situation becomes tense… „Different from me to you“ is not only about a taboo topic, which is why it was prohibited at its time, but also an attractive footage of the youth’s response against social prejudice in Germany during its magic development era in the 1950s.

TRAVELOGUE I
Twenty to eight
by Sasha Waltz

01.10.2009, 8pm (Open Dress Rehearsal)
02.10.2009, 8pm (Performance)
Opera House Hanoi, 1 Trang Tien

About the piece:

Starting point of »Travelogue I – Twenty to eight« is the kitchen. On this location, five people meet. The kitchen acts as a mirror in which ritual...s, habits and behavior patterns can be observed and reflected as they truly are. Through these reflections a web of relationships is woven. The characters run around, neurotic and obsesessive in their actions, lonely and lost, unable to find a way out ¬¬– prisoners of their own social structures.

About Sasha Waltz & Guests:
Sasha Waltz & Guests is not a contemporary dance company in the conventional sense. Since being founded by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig in Berlin in 1993 more than one hundred and fifty artists from twenty-five countries have performed as »Guests« and also produced their own independent pieces. Currently Sasha Waltz’ repertoire as a choreographer comprises twelve large, internationally acclaimed Choreographies. A small circle of associates and the permanent ensemble of dancers realise approximately one hundred performances worldwide each year thus positioning Sasha Waltz & Guests among the most successful international cultural enterprises. In 2005 the Company became autonomous once more recalling the period at the sophiensæle which was founded by Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig in 1996 and has itself grown to be a most important production house for European Independent Theatre in Berlin. Sasha Waltz & Guests will continue though to present productions at Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz where Sasha Waltz and Jochen Sandig were actively involved in the artistic direction between 1999 and 2004. The establishment of divers venues and the presentation of performances there – from the Staatsoper Unter den Linden to the Palast der Republik and the Jüdische Museum through to St. Elisabeth-Kirche – is a key element of the Company’s activities. Site and architecture specific interaction also plays an important role in the »Dialoge« series, begun 1999. Choreographers, architects, fine artists, filmmakers, actors, dancers and musicians apply improvisation and multi-disciplinary processes to investigate a wide array of themes and concepts. The dynamic potentials deriving from these artistic exchanges and related innovations in training and education enhance the Company’s future prospects. An independent cultural enterprise Sasha Waltz & Guests is actively contributing to the development of contemporary dance by fostering a new generation of choreographers. Sasha Waltz & Guests will in the future increase its co-operation with Berlin and international cultural and industrial partners with creative new and entrepreneurial projects.

Goethe-Institut Hanoi Founded in London in 2003 by Swiss artist Anthony Bannwart and Swedish artist Magnus Aronson, Tempography is a video-based, conceptual art project. This exhibition of Tempography features videos submitted primarily by participants from Vietnam.

‘Time’ and ‘movement’ as its primary elements Tempography explores with a co...llection of videos what is “between photography and cinema/film” . Since 2005 Tempography has received submissions from international active/potential video artists and has developed into a community-oriented project. Tempographs can be described as brief visual impacts creating an atmosphere, an image of thought, rather than telling a story. Previously, Tempography has been exhibited in London (2004), Stockholm (2006), and Seoul (2008) accompanied by lecture, and symposium. The workshop organized in conjunction with this exhibition is open to everyone.

These photographs explore creative means of sustainability... through traditional subsistence economies, creative communities and social cooperation.
Following an intense week of dialogue and guidance from invited university lecturers, curators and established photographers like Peter Bialobreski from Germany, known from last year’s workshop and exhibition Mapping Invisible Cities, the exhibition “Creative Economies” showcases the collaborative efforts of 23 emerging photographers form 18 European and Asian countries united by a shared theme. The Goethe-Institut presents

Losers and Winners

Directed by: Ulrike Franke, Michael Loeken. Color, 96 Min., 2006
German with English and Vietnamese subtitles
In 1992 the world’s most modern coking plant was built in Dortmund at a cost of 650 million Euros. Eight years later, the plant was decommissioned and sold, together with complete construction plans, to China. Ulrike Franke and Michael Loeken observed - with sensitivity, attention to detail, and a sense for unintentional comedy - the year-and-a-half-long process of disassembly, with all its conflicts between the few remaining German workers and their 400 Chinese colleagues. Demolition in the West – construction in the East. The audience is left to decide who were the winners and who were the losers. Losers and winners won many important awards (Grimme-Preis) in Germany as well as at many Festivals all over the world.

Goethe-Institut Hanoi Seen by Others

"I live in the midst of people
whose eyes mirror an image of me
but can I love this image?”

Opening on Wednesday, 20 May 2009, 6 pm
Duration: 21 - 27 May 2009
Open daily 9 am – 6 pm
Goethe-Institut Hanoi, 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc

The theme of Duong Thuy Duong’s paintings is always the human being. I...n Seen by Others the artist addresses the loss of the self and the brutalization of the soul. One spends a lifetime chasing one’s wishes in a hopeless attempt to possess what one desires and loves, and in the process destroys the souls of others as well. Duong Thuy Duong wishes to make visible with her paintings this barely perceptible process.

Seen by Others also speaks of the fact that while we readily judge our fellow man, we often shrink back from a confrontation with ourselves. And so it is the head of the artist which moves through this exhibition, observing itself with all its chasms, while being observed by others, by the public.

Duong Thuy Duong moves between worlds. She began her career as an artist in Hanoi, where she was born in 1979. After completing her initial studies in fashion design, she moved on to a university education in the field of painting. The change in direction was followed by a change of location – since 2002 Duong Thuy Duong has studied in Germany at the College of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein in Halle on the Saale.

The artist will be present at the opening.
