Bearskin Lodge

I have tons of childhood memories from Bearskin. We use to go there every summer before the big, fancy lodge was there. I remember a small log cabin lodge and a scavenger hunt for the kids that were staying in the few cabins there were way back then. I think I was maybe 11 or12? About 30 years ago. Haven't been there since the year the big lodge went up. Now we can't afford to stay, but I would love to come back some day.

It's the same memory, reactivated every time I visit, the wonderful smell of the forest! And the second most memorable one happened in 2001, when I encountered and moved away quietly, gently, and respectfully from a lone wolf during a walk on the old overgrown road connecting the lodge to the campground. (I've been visiting Bearskin since 1954 -- first as a camper, later as a Cabin 2 regular, and finally as a lodge guest whose last visit was in 2001.)

We only discovered Bearskin a couple years ago and it has become our "get away from it all" destination. My favorite memory was when we were there this past fall. I woke up on Sunday morning to light snow falling. I stepped onto the porch to observe the beauty and heard nothing but silence and solitude. There were birds flitting about who didn'... See Moret seem to be bothered by my presence, so I put my hand out, and a nuthatch landed on my hand (just like the photo of Bob on the website). I felt like one with nature!
