Grand Rapids Community College Continuing Ed and Professional Development
This course will provide students with the skills for entry level employment as a Grip in the film and television industry. The course is designed with the intention of not only providing the necessary foundations for entry level employment, but also of providing an overview of film production employment in Grip, Camer...a, and Lighting professions.
The grip department in film and television production is responsible for setting up, rigging, and securing safely most equipment utilized on a film production set. The work requires long hours, a propensity for physical labor, an ability to work with tools, and a willingness to work both indoors and out of doors in a variety of weather. The Grip is the "handyman" of the film community and this course will introduce the student to technicians they will work with most closely: The Electrical Department and the Camera Department. In addition, this course will provide hands on tutorials with basic grip equipment, including Camera dollies and Stage Cranes; working vocabulary of technical terms; and the ability to identify visually and retrieve key grip equipment necessary to the working film set.
Upon completion of this module, the student will have an understanding of the technical career path on a film and television set and will be entry level qualified to labor with working professionals in the Grip Department.
About the Instructor:
Dennis de la Mata is a seasoned veteran as a teacher and key grip. He has worked on over 90 feature films including The Blues Brothers, Groundhog Day, Thief, andBackdraft, as well as various television series including The Fugitive and Early Edition. He has taught grip/electric in conjunction with the University of Illinois BIS, and he is the appointed training & safety officer for IATSE Local #467. He also founded Midwest Camera Cars & Cranes, which possessed the first of two Hollywood styled camera insert cars in the Midwest and specialized in camera support equipment.
