Harvey Bernard Milk (22 May 1930 – 27 November 1978) was an American politician and gay rights activist, and the first openly gay city supervisor of San Francisco, California. He was, according to Time magazine, "the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet."
As the "...Mayor of Castro Street," he was active during a time of substantial change in San Francisco politics and increasing visibility of gay and lesbian people in American society. He was assassinated in 1978, along with Mayor George Moscone, by then recently resigned city supervisor Dan White making him a LGBT community "martyr". White's relatively mild sentence for the murders led to the White Night Riots, and eventually the abolition of diminished capacity defense in California.
-----
A champion of hope and civil rights for those of sexual minorities, Harvey Milk was one of the most prominent individuals in the entire history of the gay rights movement. Yet, there is no memorial in his honor, no day celebrating his life and legacy, nothing beyond a whisper of hope and a bronze plaque on Castro St.
We must change that. We must band together, and fight. More than ever, today, we know what it was like, fighting for the things that others take for granted. He fought against a California proposition against greater odds than we did - and won. We can't let his spirit down, but first, there has to be awareness.
So gather your friends, gay, straight, bi, queer, trans, and join together in honoring this legend, our legend, and fight for what's ours.

On June 28th, Locations all over the country will hold an event to remember the Stonewall Riots as well as stand up to say no to further discrimination towards the LGBT community.
Locations that have begun planning are: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Michigan,... North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Washington DC, and The United Kingdom
Information on the events in the above places will be available soon, so keep checking back!
Each state will have a group of organizer that will plan a March for equality and a Rally that will include speeches by local figures such as Government Officials, Religious Leaders, and Friends of our cause.
For the Rally, we will be providing a DVD with some performances and videos, geared towards firing up the community into action. There will also be an "Action Center" at each location that will display some information and new tools on how the members of the community can get involved in fighting for their rights in their own backyard.
Some locations will be holding their annual Pride events on this day, and we are working with them to include some key elements of Million March for Equality, including a contingency March in the Pride Parade, as well as an "Action Center" booth at the Pridefest.
The goal of this event is to empower the community, some of whom have not yet become involved in the fight, to have to tools to be able to stand and fight against bigotry and fear.
Will you stand with us?
