Not many films can bring a tear in my eye. Pan's Labyrinth and Orphanage ALMOST did...Grave Of The Fireflies did. Maybe it's because I have a daughter almost the same age as Setsuko. This film really gives something to think about.

This is the saddest movie ever made.

You are seriously cold-blooded if this movie doesn't strike you emotionally. Great characters, animation and voice-acting.

Great artwork, great story, decent voice acting, and an amazing ending...But it definitely has its cons as well.

Perhaps the biggest con was that there was so much the older brother could've done to make things a bit easier (such as helping his unfair, but willing aunt). Granted, you have to remember this is a 10 (or so) year old boy that had more to handle than most people handle in their life...but it's still a bit of an emotional killer for a while knowing that something could be done.

The thing I enjoyed most about the movie was that it was honest and very real. There were no heroes and there were no villains: there were normal people in a time of war. The artwork is another huge bonus.

Finally, while it did have its emotional cons, the ending still hits pretty hard. I can't say I've cried during a movie, but this came pretty darn close. It's hard to state points that hit the hardest without giving anything away, so go and see it yourself! You won't regret it...just don’t expect a Disney ending.

I wrote a review a while back here:
http://dastardlymusings.blogspot.com/2006/05/61-irreversible.html

This is probably one of the most important films made this century, and is timeless in its message...there are situations like this happening everyday in the world, from Rwanda to Iraq...and it will keep happening as long as there are those who are willing to pay the cost without experiencing it themselves...I wish every world leader would watch this and see for themselves the human cost resulting from their decisions...behind every statistic you read or hear about on CNN, there's a Seita and Setsuko...

Hayatımda izlediğim en etkileyici çizgi film.
Hala hatırladığımda tüylerim ürperir.
Tekrar izlemek gelir içimden ama yapamam...

Best piece of celluloid, Japan has ever produced. Watch this movie. You will care for the characters than any real person, by the time you get to the end. The ending of this movie will leave you questioning the blunders of past, present and future politics.

A very tragic movie. It's the first anime movie that I cryed :'(. Let this be the lession to all; wars is about gambling peoples' lives whenever they do not think about the consequences of their actions. Determination; whether winning or losing the war is an illusion, it's absolutely 100% cause & effect.
