Great Big Yam Potatoes The music player lives! (This page, left column, just below the Fan window...there it is.) Thanks to Edwin McAllister for loaning several of his field recordings. More tracks to come.

Don't read this while hungry. Here's an article about Arthur Davis, chef and owner of The Old Country Store in Lorman, MS, and the Official Food Vendor of Great Big Yam Potatoes 2009, from the July 2006 issue of Southern Living.

Links to a couple of nice articles about last year's GBYP from the Natchez Democrat... It's time to make fiddlin' history from the May 15, 2008 edition, and Infectious beats fill college grounds from May 18, 2008,

Hot off the website, http://www.bigyampotatoes, and subject to change - or not.

Great Big Yam Potatoes Anybody have video/music from last year's GYBP? Let me know and I'll stick it in. Also, I'm a facebook moron. If any tech-savvy folks know how to set up this page so it appears in a Google search, I'd be much obliged.

Great Big Yam Potatoes Jack Magee at 2008 GBYP...

Jack Magee is generously donating screen-printed teeshirts to be sold at GBYP as a fund-raiser for next year. Dave Morgan adapted his poster design for the front design. A picture of a dead Mississippi fiddle player (taken pre-deceased) is going on the back...

Once again, Great Big Yam Potatoes will host a fiddle contest with cash prizes, along with an outside stage featuring great old-time groups performing throughout the day. Also, there will be tons of jamming on the green, so bring your fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, basses, jawbones, larynxes, or whatever other sound-making device you prefer and join the fun! That evening, Catherine Bishop will call a dance to the music of Sound Wagon. Find a schedule of the day's events here: http://www.bigyampotatoes.com/forms/sche dule09.pdf
The Old Country Store in Lorman, MS will be a food vendor again this year, so bring an appetite. Primitive camping is available (and encouraged) Friday and Saturday nights on the grounds of Jefferson College. The campsite is primitive, so bring everything you'll need. There are three fire pits for cooking, a picnic area and parking area.
The fiddle contest begins at nine o’clock, Saturday, May 16th, 2009. The registration fee is five dollars for each category. Age divisions are: PeeWee (1-11), Juniors (12-17) and Seniors (18 & over). Seniors are judged on selections in each of the following categories: Old-Time Dance (Reel or Breakdown in 4/4), Old-Time Waltz (3/4), Cross-Tuning and Tune of Choice. For Senior fiddle players wanting to play, but not compete there is a ten dollar fee for each category. Complete rules and registration forms are available here: http://www.bigyampotatoes.com/forms.htm
The Mississippi Fiddlers' Association awards cash prizes for first and second place in each tune category. All monies used for these awards are donated. We are currently seeking donations for an additional third place prize. If you'd like to donate, please make your checks out to Mississippi Fiddlers' Association and send them in care of April Palmer, 120 Sunnycrest Drive, Ridgeland, MS 39157. The association has received generous support from Jefferson College, along with several individuals and clubs. Read More
