Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) Birds of prey/falconry presentation! Join BV resident Mark Wolters on Saturday Nov 14 to learn about the first year of a raptor’s life, general characteristics, falconry and raptors seen in the Valley. Mark will be joined by a Harris hawk and he will fly her weather permitting. Meet at 10:30 am at the BV Public Library.

The last lecture in GARNA’s “Our Sense of Place” Season One will take place on Monday, October 12 with a presentation by Jim Aragon, from the Division of Wildlife’s Salida office. Jim’s talk will focus on animals who don what is called in wildlife circles “head gear”, horns and antlers. He will address where these dive...rse animal populations can be seen in the wild as well as the best ways of dealing with wildlife in our urban settings. The presentation will be followed by a general question and answer session on the wildlife of the Upper Arkansas River bioregion. The lecture will take place at the Salida Community Center, 3rd and F Streets, beginning at 7:00 PM. The lecture is free but donations are greatly appreciated. GARNA’s “Our Sense of Place” a year-long program about our place in respect to the Upper Arkansas River bioregion program will continue with a lecture on the History and Future of Agriculture. Ann Ewing of the USFS Salida District will give a glimpse into historic agriculture/farming/gardening practices in Chaffee Coun...ty utilizing historic photos and local statistics on local farming and agricultural practices. David Lynch of Guidestone Farms will discuss current issues of population growth, development pressures and the need to protect the agricultural resources of the Valley. He will also share information on the emergence of a local food system and the efforts of both the Central Colorado Foodshed Alliance and Guidestone to encourage local food production such as the Farmer’s Markets, the Backyard community centered agriculture project. He will also introduce Guidestone’s new Land Link initiative to link retiring farmers and absentee landowners with next generation farmers. The lecture will be held on Monday, September 14 at 7:00 PM at the Salida Community Center, F and 3rd Streets. The program is free but a $5.00 donation is much appreciated.
