Green Idea House
thanks our Mayor, Michael DiVirgilio for giving us a holiday gift.
He posted a very cogent note (below) to the comments section that accompanied the WSJ article that discusses our house project.

As the Mayor of Hermosa Beach, I am ...proud that this type of progress -- and environmental leadership -- is taking place in our community!
One thing is clear after Copenhagen -- it's up to local and state governments, and the communities they represent, to lead the way at encouraging innovation in green technology, sustainable development and responsible energy consumption.
As an early adopter of the Cool Cities initiative, this is exactly the type of project we were looking to foster when we committed to surpassing its 2020 environmental benchmarks.

There are plenty places to jump in - from the nukes to the doubting Thomas’s, it is all there. Please feel free to post on line ...and balance out the conversation.
Below is our contribution to the dialogue:
derek crane wrote: "We want to save the planet, " says Mr. Fortunato. Well good for you. I, however, will take Al Gore's cue and have no worries about my carbon footprint; except for issues when my cost of energy exceed the benefits I derive from such expenses. Everything else is just feel-good claptrap. Derek Crane
Robert Fortunato replied: Hi Derek, We addressed the quote in an earlier post, but wanted to expound a bit more on our rationale.
I am trained as an economist, not an environmentalist, so I appreciate your point. The question is what are “my costs”? Externalities have to be factored in if you are going to do a responsible cost analysis.
For us, the importance of reducing our carbon footprint comes down to some very basic things that we can observe with our own eyes. For example, we find the accumulation of black soot on our eight year old son’s bedroom windowsill completely unacceptable. It is the residue of burning carbon. In addition to climate change, those fine soot particles are linked to cancer, heart disease and other illnesses.
How much does that cost?
In addition, the tide pools at Abalone Cove in Palos Verdes, CA are among our favorite local spots. Over the last 15 years we have witnessed the rising water and sand start to destroy that fragile ecosystem.
How much does that cost?
I would suggest that our collective costs are exceeding our collective benefits already. We can do better. Join us at greenideahouse.com

Here in the South Bay we may not be a small island state, but we are just as vulnerable.

On Tuesday, Robert spoke about the Green Idea House project at California’s Green Workforce Coalition meeting at Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. Robert Mejia, the Founder of the Coalition and Charisse Bartholomew Dunn, of Healing Spaces by Design (http://pasadena.insidelocalcities.com/he aling-spaces-by-design.ph...p) asked Robert to overview the project.
It was a great meeting where speakers from the government and private industry talked about the future of green jobs in Advanced Transportation, Green Building, the Utility Sector, and the Smart Grid.

This weekend we bought our living Christmas tree. We weren’t sure quite what to expect; but we are very happy with our tree, the service and the message behind it.
Through our house project, we met Scott Martin who started The Living Christmas Company. His incredible vision for what could be and his ability to exec...ute on it are a great story that is worthy of support. So if you haven’t already, buy a living Christmas tree.

Green Idea House Hermosa Beach Leads the Revolution (pun intended) as it took the bold step last week to be the first urban, small lot environment in the state to allow rooftop wind energy systems. Kudos to the City Council, Planning Commission, Planning Department and key advocates, like Dency Nelson, who all worked together to bring this idea to life.

In a world of stories "ripped" for storage in thumb-sized drives, and satellite broadcasts from motel rooms in dusty villages, the classic newspaper journalist may still have more than a little value in the media today.

Today Monica attended an Ocean Friendly Garden Workshop. Our oceans are heavily polluted by urban run off. That’s right! Water washing off our homes and yards picks up pollutants that quickly end up in the ocean. The Green Idea House will be employing many systems to prevent storm run off.
The Workshop was lead by G...3 and sponsored by the West Basin Muni Water District and SBESC
