Greenfire Are you feeling like you need a little more awesome in your life? Stop by the GreenFire house at 8:30 tonight for a pre-meeting poster-making extravaganza! At the 9:00 meeting we'll be talking about the environmental film series (plural!), the small house heating challenge (monetary prizes!), the Alternative Giving Fair (just plain cool!), and more! See you tonight!

Greenfire Sophie Patterson, Stacey Day, Dain Lopez, Landon Coates-Welsh and Chris Conrad went to attend this green/renewable energy conference the weekend of reading period!!!

(From Chris Conrad): Can Wisconsin Afford New Nuclear Reactors? Peter Bradford’s presentation will focus on the unfavorable economics of new nuclear reactors and on the several myths that prop up the central myths of a nuclear renaissance. ...

Greenfire Did you know that many showerheads on campus have a flowrate of about 7 gallons of water per minute? That's 70 gallons of water (a giant fishtank!) for a ten-minute shower, not to mention the energy required to heat all that water! Wowza! Challenge yourself to take shorter showers, or to shower less often.

Greenfire Austin and Will's project installing a 2.8KW solar array on Youngchild Hall received $7000 in financial support today from the Wisconsin Focus On Energies group!

Greenfire Lawrence students and parents assembled on the LU tennis courts to spell out 350 with their bodies in support of establishing standards for maximum levels of atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

Hey all, don't forget about Chris Conrad's campaign for National End
Mountaintop Removal Day which is TODAY! The gist is that you need to meet him at the MAIN HALL CLOCK at 4 PM
TODAY, and then you'll go to Chase Bank (the biggest financier of
mountaintop removal) to "wash" their dirty, dirty building with soapy
rags and ...show them that we don't support their dirty, dirty actions.
It should only take 30-40 minutes, there might be fiddles and various
other instruments, and Sonia might go in her bikini, so you won't want
to miss this!
See you there!Read More

Folks, as soon as I find the grant form, I am going to pester the powers that be until we get a few of things. The campus center is hypocritical not to have them, but all the main restrooms need them. If anybody has used them, they are WAY cool.

Often times, only big events and issues get attention, but the truth is that all the little things we do each day to make our lives more environmentally friendly add up to make substantial differences! What's one of the things you do to live more sustainably...

Greenfire is hosting a Climate 350 event on Saturday (Oct. 17th). Be at the LU tennis courts by 3 PM to spell out "350" with our bodies and have an aerial photograph taken by the Appleton Post Crescent! Then enjoy some yummy hot chocolate and treats!

Tell your senator: Reject the nomination of Joseph Pizarchik as director of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement. As a regulator of coal mining in Pennsylvania, Pizarchik has a long history of making pro-industry decisions at the expense of protecting communities and the environment.
In a controversi...al vote last week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee confirmed Pizarchik, even as calls for the White House to withdraw the nomination mounted from environmental groups and hundreds of concerned citizens from coal-mining states.
There is still time to stop this pro-industry regulator from taking over the federal agency charged with protecting communities and natural systems from the impacts of coal mining. Contact your senator now and demand the rejection of the Pizarchik nomination.
