Becky Stewart Music in public schools is a win-win proposition. It enriches mind, body and soul. It also builds self-esteem in children who so desperately need it in these overwhelming times. Music was the one class that I always looked forward to attending.

Susan Mathiesen

Susan Mathiesen You might remember taking Algebra or Chemistry or English or whatever, but you EXPERIENCE your music class. Marching Band kept me (mostly) out of trouble in high school and my other musical adventures are the memories that I treasure. I don't think an algebra trip to see the sights of Salzburg and Vienna would have had the same charm.

Country Joe was a volunteer teacher for a few years at San Francisco's Opportunity High School when it was located at 739 Bryant St - Just below the Hall of Justice. I used my classroom on occassion for rehearsal space for a band I was managing. We were also trying to start a school rock band. I was a full time teache...r during the day at Opportunity and worked with the band in the evenings. They also rehearsed in my garage in Daly City around 1969/70. The band was called Gold and they went on to play at Fillmore West with Mike Bloomfield and at Winterland opening for Ten Years After. Anyway back to school Joe taught 4 classes which met on Mon, Wed and Fridays - song writing, recording, guitar, and a class we taught together a class in the music business - a class of students were to put on concerts as a learning experience. They also got paid. Summerland came of this and was sponsored by Bill Graham. All of this and more is in my book Country Joe and Me. Summerland featured Jerry Garcia and Old and In The Way and the Rowan Brothers. Summerland took place at Bimbo's 365 club in 1973.Read More
