Greenwich Music Festival
In this free concert, sponsored by the Greenwich Arts Council with the Greenwich Library, we will explore the wide array of chamber, solo, vocal and choral music that was composed in the camp. As in the opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis, these works share a common thread of using musical references and quotations that woul...d have spoken very directly to the Terezin audience.
By incorporating religious and cultural motifs into their music, the composers of Terezin called on their fellow prisoners to recall their great heritage and to retain hope against all odds. This performance will feature mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin, pianist Joseph Smith, a trio from ICE, conductor Robert Ainsley and chorus members from local high schools.

Greenwich Music Festival
A special educational project of the festival, this program is devoted to the children of Terezin – the poems they wrote, the songs they sang and the lives they led. Terezin survivor Ela Weissberger will speak about her experiences growing up in the camp and performing in the Terezin children's choir.
A local inter-fait...h children's choir, directed by Cantor Asa Fradkin, will perform works written by Krasa, Ullman and Klein for the children in the camp. Mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin, who last year starred as Penelope in GMF's Return of Ulysses, will perform a cycle of songs by Lori Laitman based on poetry written by children in the camp, "I never saw another butterfly."

DER KAISER VON ATLANTIS is a beautiful, irreverent one-act opera composed by Viktor Ullmann and librettist Petr Kien while they were living in the Terezín concentration camp. The original performances were halted when SS guards watched a rehearsal and realized the plot was a thinly veiled allegory for Hitler’s war agai...nst the Jews. Ullmann and Kien were sent to Auschwitz on October 16, 1944; they died in the camp. A single manuscript survived in the hands of Ullmann's friend.
This new production features young stars from the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Australia and La Scala and the phenomenal NY-based ensemble ICE.
