I have always believed this. Especially at times when you are feeling low. Acting happy, even if you don't feel happy at first, will eventually make you happier. If for no other reason that other people will eventually start to shy away from you if you are constantly miserable and projecting that.

I don't think what Montaigne said necessarily is a negative. Maybe it means if you recognize the natural direction and acknowledge it, then it is easier to adjust or change--like taking baby steps out of a bad habit.

Yes! Sometimes I find it's good to reevaluate our resolutions and see if they are really OURS. If we make resolutions that stem from who we are instead of who someone else WANTS us to be, we're more likely to keep them. Maybe entertaining is your thing but just not now, or maybe it's just not at all. And that's OK.
