Grevy's Zebra Trust

Grevy's Zebra Trust The Grevy's Zebra Trust wishes you all a fantastic 2010!

Grevy's Zebra Trust

Grevy's Zebra Trust Today was the Grevy’s Zebra Ambassador Programme’s annual workshop! A gathering of the incredibly dedicated community members who are employed as Ambassadors to protect, monitor and raise awareness about Grevy’s zebra in the areas of El Barta (near Baragoi) and Kaisut (near Laisamis). Also in attendance were our key pa...rtners including the Kenya Wildlife Service, Milgis Trust, the conservancies of Kalomudang and Suyan, and our great friend Chief Lesoloyia.

We discussed the results of the programme and came up with realistic and practical next steps which will be shared with the Ambassadors’ respective communities for their input. We are looking forward to having a great 2010 as we take this exciting programme forward!

Grevy's Zebra Trust A few weeks ago we visited the Naibelibeli plains in West Gate Community Conservancy and counted over 180 Grevy's zebra! The plains are one of their favourite places especially when it greens up after the rains.

Craig Leggett In all the training I have done, the workshops with the Meibae communities have been the best and the most rewarding. The work Belinda and the GZT staff are doing in the area is incredible and I am impressed with the respect the community has for her and GZT.

Grevy's Zebra Trust

Grevy's Zebra Trust In November 2009 Craig Leggett and Belinda Low, both Certified Educators in Holistic Management, spent five days training 75 community members from the five group ranches which form the umbrella institution of Meibae Conservancy, one of the most important areas for Grevy’s zebra. The Manager of Meibae, Fred Longonyek, ...did a fantastic job of organising the logistics which were challenging for such a large group of people from a huge area. The training was undertaken in partnership with the Northern Rangelands Trust.

Holistic Management identifies your values both as an individual and as a community and uses these values as a guide for decision-making. In the Samburu context these values revolve around livestock, culture, wildlife and other natural resources.

The primary resource for supporting pastoral livelihoods as well as Grevy’s zebra and other wild grazers is plants, and of particular importance are perennial grasses, which have declined significantly. Perennial grasses are a major stabilising force for soil in these semi-arid areas and their disappearance has contributed to a highly degraded landscape with increasing amounts of bare, capped soil and the establishment of less palatable herbaceous plants and woody vegetation.

The workshop focused on the reasons why perennial grasses have disappeared, how to plan livestock grazing to create the right conditions for perennial grasses to grow again, while at the same time taking into account the current realities of an increasing population and less nomadic lifestyle. It was a fantastic union of indigenous knowledge and current grazing management practices and we are looking forward to seeing the results put into practice. Go Meibae!

Meibae makes up part of one of the largest populations of Grevy's zebra on community-owned land (800+ animals) which moves between Meibae, West Gate, Kalama and the national reserves. Yes, very sadly we did lose quite a few Grevy's zebra during the drought. We did some management of water to increase accessibility for Grevy's zebra which certainly ... Stefan Hello Grevy´s Zebra Trust, nice to meet you here in facebook. Does anybody know something about the selous-zebra in Uganda? Is it also in danger?

Stefan
Stefan
But on the other hand: Do you know the typical look of this Selous zebra? Does it have shadow stripes? Does it have stripes on the legs?

There is little consensus on sub-species classifications of the plains zebra (Equus burchellii). There is a zebra found in Zimbabwe called Equus burchellii selousii which could be what the zoo is referring to? I have not seen a picture of this sub-species. For more information on taxonomy, you can download the IUCN equid action plan at http://data.iucn.org/themes/ssc/actionplans/equids/equidactionplanlowres.pdf

Grevy's Zebra Trust Yesterday we spent a great day in Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves with the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Conservation Fund team. Their energy and dedication to supporting field conservation is inspiring! It was wonderful to see the Grevy's zebra enjoying new shoots of green grass and we were also lucky to witn...ess a territorial male chasing off intruder males in order to protect his reproductive interests!

Grevy's Zebra Trust This is part of a pilot initiative being carried out by West Gate Conservancy with technical support from the Grevy's Zebra Trust to improve rangeland health in their buffer zone through clearing unwanted bush and re-seeding with perennial grass. It will be complemented by long-term planned livestock grazing. The clear...ing project has provided critical employment to community members during the recent and terrible drought.

Grevy's Zebra Trust Grass planting started in West Gate Conservancy today! The Conservancy has spent the last three months clearing unwanted Acacia reficiens in their buffer zone and preparing it for re-seeding. The long-term aim, in conjunction with planned livestock grazing, is to restore the area's productivity, making it once again viable for livestock and wildlife.

Grevy's Zebra Trust We are delighted to announce that the first rains fell last night in areas across Samburu and Marsabit! Although Laisamis has not yet had rain, Rikapo who is there following up Grevy's zebra mortalities reported by our scouts says that the clouds are building and rain looks promising. We hope they continue for a good length of time!
