Music Weekly: Holly Johnson and Sparks
6 Nov 2009, 3:44 am

This week's Music Weekly has something of a retro feel. Our first guest is Holly Johnson, the Frankie Goes to Hollywood singer, who met with Paul MacInnes ahead of the release of the band's greatest hits package. They discuss gay rights, being propositioned by Andy Warhol (Holly's claim, not Paul's) and being controversialists (ownership of that one is debatable).

Now, we may be back to our normal two-interview format this week, but we've decided to try something brand new in the segment we normally call Singles Club. Instead of a selection of songs, our new monthly feature will see Alexis Petridis joining us to discuss the biggest/bestest/most interesting new album of the month. In a flash of inspiration, we've decided to call it Album Club, and this week Paul, Alexis and Rosie Swash will be weighing up the merits of Julian Casablancas's debut solo album Phrazes for the Young. Tell us what you think of the album, and what you think of Album Club.

We haven't forgotten our promise of a retro theme, you know, which is why this week's show concludes with eccentric pop duo Sparks. The Mael brothers were in town to discuss their ambitious new project, an hour-long composition called the Seduction of Ingmar Bergman, and they chat with Rosie about Swedish existentialism, the pleasures of "dicking around" and why certain other pop stars (mentioning no names, ahem) have earned mainstream success by nicking their ideas.

Thanks to our extended review section we didn't have time for Feature With No Name this week so that, as they say, is that. If you really like us you can be Music Weekly's friend on Facebook. Please let us know your thoughts on the guests and music in the space below.

Vincent Bergeron

Vincent Bergeron This album
is part of a new music era where albums are presented in CD-r
audio-data, but are officially published and are in distribution in
all the main mp3 downloading sites (amazon, i-tunes, fnac...)

Please
review your positions on how you evaluate a
“professional publication”. Otherwise, eventually, only rich
people with little talent will be reviewed in magazines and
newspapers.

Chris Jones

Chris Jones Hi, enjoyed the Album Club (I suggested it in my last message so maybe I am to blame:) and think it is definitely worth doing once a month. What would be interesting could be polling the listeners to decide which album is reviewed. Put a poll on your Facebook page with a choice of 3 recent releases. Interaction with your listeners is always a good thing. I liked the one sentence summary - very Twitter-like.

Mark Fleming-Williams

Mark Fleming-Williams Liked Album Club, I think the podcast is at its best when its giving opinions on (preferably new) tracks, so while Album Club is a welcome addition I think I could handle a podcast with both Album Club and Singles Club. Album Club could also be very boring if the album is not a good one...

Richard Cleves

Richard Cleves Thanks for the in-depth Lynval Golding feature. The Specials really were quite... special, (coming from someone who had all the 7"'s first time around!) His music selections were classics but a bit too obvious IMO.

Thomas Wait! What other tracks were played on Singles Club - I thoght I heard something!?

Jonathan

Jonathan Hello
Just wanted to say thanks for the podcast.
I recently drove 4200 miles from San Francisco to New York and it dawned on me that 90% of my road trip soundtrack was stuff I've discovered from the show - from Duffy Powers, to Fever Ray, to Washed Out etc etc etc etc etc...
It also helps that listening to Rosie is like having my ears tickled by fairies.
thanks again.

Esther Freeman

Esther Freeman Just wanted to say that I've just signed up to the podcasts and I'm really enjoying them. I listen to them every Saturday morning while I clean the house. They bring me a little bit of joy while I scrub the toilet! ; )

Joe Merrell

Joe Merrell I don't think - no matter how hard I try - that I will understand the appeal of Lady GaGa. I went to her website looking for answers and the was immediately confronted with an ad for some sort of weirdly shaped Lady GaGa designed Dr. Dre brand headphones. I don't get it. I can't be the music - surely.

This week, Chase and Status tell us about working with Snoop Dog, Jay-Z and Rihanna, and explain why American rappers love a bit of dubstep. Plus, we get jazzy with Portico Quartet and remember the Afghan…
