THE BOSTON GLOBE - August 3, 2008

CAPE COD TIMES - June 14, 2008

As for which movies will stand out, who knows? But here's a list of 10 that I'm looking forward to seeing (I've already seen the excellent "Bigger, Stronger, Faster*"), along with my (perhaps peculiar) reasons why and where they're playing:

1. "Guest of Cindy Sherman," a documentary about, among other things, celebrity.

Why: I've been fascinated by photographer Cindy Sherman since seeing her provocative works — which often are commentaries on perceptions of women — at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art many years ago. I'm hoping this will be an opportunity to learn more about her.

This year’s Provincetown Film Festival included 61 documentaries, 55 feature films, four Portuguese Spotlight films, five short films programs, special screenings of films featuring the three award recipients, and a series of youth- and diversity-oriented film programming.

By the time we spoke, John Waters had taken in a slew of films, including Guest of Cindy Sherman (directed by Tom Donahue and Paul Hasegawa-Overacke) and Towelhead, the feature film directorial debut of Alan Ball, who attended the festival with the film’s star, Summer Bishil, and its producer, Ted Hope.

ZOOM IN ONLINE

As an art critic, it was hard for Paul H-O not to be intrigued by the New York photographer, Cindy Sherman. He set out to make a documentary about her never suspecting that as the film progressed so would his personal relationship with Sherman. Together with Guest of Cindy Sherman co-director Tom Donahue, Paul H-O spoke to Zoom In Online’s Keith Uhlich during the film’s run at the Tribeca Film Festival where they talked about Paul’s relationship with Cindy, the New York art scene of the 1990s, and much more.

NERVE.COM - THE SCREENGRAB - May 1, 2008

The documentary Guest of Cindy Sherman is the unchallenged hot-gossip item of the Tribeca festival...The film attracted considerable buzz in the days leading up to its first Tribeca screening, and this past week Sherman herself sent out a disclaimer... It's easy to sympathize with Sherman's queasiness over having her ex-boyfriend showing their home movies in theaters and charging admission, but it must be said that Guest of Cindy Sherman adds up to more than a public display of ungentlemanly behavior. Sherman herself actually comes out pretty well in it, both as a person and as a counterweight to the preening macho men with whom she competed for attention in the 1980s...

Voyeur Heaven

It's not the clearest window, full of streaks and film grain, and you, the voyeur seem to be shaky on your feet... but it's a LOT of keyhole peeking. Mercifully no sex, but lots of people get in front of H-0's camera who may regret it now and that, my friends, is entertainment. For keyhole peekers.

There's a lot of glib and cute stuff for art lovers too, the overall flavor remains Gallery Beat!

Oh: and Julian Schanabel comes off as a raging asshole: and that's always nice.

Best parts: John Waters. Always.
