"Happy-Go-Lucky" is a film that is energetically fun from beginning to end, but thought-provoking as well. Like Mike Leigh's 1999 film, "Topsy-Turvey," the film's theme centers on personal happiness or un-happiness in the face of tragedy. In "Happy-Go-Lucky," Poppy's sheer joy and unflagging optimism is contrasted with her antagonists' unfortunate circumstances and their subsequent dour attitudes. The movie starts off slow and is hampered by a score that reminds one of a low-budget BBC TV show. But stick it out--by the end of the film the seemingly mundane details of Poppy's life come together to forge a subtle, but powerful, emotional effect.
