We need as many people as possible to help stop this from happening. We agree that certain regulations need to be put in place but not a Ban of the Entire Python Genus.( including Boas Constrictors and Ball Pythons)..Let your voice/opinion be heard.

      “I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals.”
Over the years, I've heard many people—including dog breeders, ranchers, dairymen, and the occasional veterinarian—clai...m that HSUS top dog Wayne Pacelle once denied he had any sort of "hands-on" fondness for animals. I've always filed this under the "rumor" category because I couldn't sunstantiate a quotation from Pacelle that came anywhere near that.

      Until now.

For a research geek like me, the Amazon.com "Search Inside" feature is nothing short of a miracle. With just a few carefully chosen search terms, the elusive quote popped right out.

It turns out that in 1992, Pacelle spent some time hanging out with Ted Kerasote, a nature writer who made his name penning articles for Audubon, Outside, and Sports Afield magazines. Their discussions became a short episode in Kerasote's book Bloodties: Nature, Culture, and the Hunt.

Kerasote writes that the then-26-year-old Pacelle told him: "I don't have a hands-on fondness for animals. I did not grow up bonded to any particular nonhuman animal. I like them and I pet them and I'm kind to them, but there's no special bond between me and other animals."

I'm reproducing a handful of pages from this book so you can see the quotations in their proper context. (Quotations? Plural? Yes. There's more.)

In what I imagine must have been an unusually candid, comfortable conversation for Pacelle, Kerasote asks him if his opposition to hunting is flexible enough to "let people hunt for food if they did it respectfully."

Pacelle replies, after thinking, "I think that I would campaign against it. Yes, I think that I would." He sums up his plan to target the institution of hunting like this: "We're out to minimize suffering wherever it can be done ... abusive forms of hunting for now, all hunting eventually."

And what about pets? Kerasote presses Pacelle, asking if he would "envision a future with no pets in the world."

"I wouldn't say that I envision that, no," Pacelle offers. "If I had my personal view perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don't want to see another cat or dog born. It's not something I strive for, though."

In Kerasote's brief encounters, he also draws out Wayne Pacelle, and then his colleague Heidi Prescott, as "zero population growth" believers where humans are concerned.

Pacelle admits: "I don't believe in the green revolution as a means of feeding the world, and I certainly don't plan to have children. I take it as a very serious personal responsibility not to put another consumer on this planet." Prescott confirms that she had her tubes tied at age 25.

I should say in closing that to my knowledge, no one has asked Wayne Pacelle in recent years if he still agrees with these statements. Perhaps someone should.

HR2811 has been voted out of committee after being amended to include only Burmese and Rock pythons. Unfortunately, this bill still prohibits interstate transport instead of just importation. We still need to fight this bill because they wo...uldn't make this change. In addition, stopping HR2811 would stop S373 because HR2811 is the companion bill to S373.

I'm also glad to see someone taking down HSUS. If the public sees how corrupt these people are, then we have a better chance of stopping their foolish and hateful bills.

WILMINGTON, NC, December 16--In a letter addressed to the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works the US Chamber of Commerce takes a position opposing S. 373 that echoes the position of the United States Association of Reptile Keeper...s. The bill ostensibly written to address the issue of feral Burmese pythons in the Everglades is overreaching and circumvents the scientific listing process called for by the Lacey Act through the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

USARK believes that Burmese pythons have been sensationalized in the media and S. 373 has become overly politicized. USARK president Andrew Wyatt stated, “I don’t think there is any doubt that the Humane Society of the United States is trying to highjack this bill and use it as a tool to destroy the trade in high quality captive bred reptiles”. The HSUS has a long standing ideological position opposing all reptiles in captivity. They have lobbied extensively to pass as broad a version of S. 373 as possible.

As written, S. 373 would not achieve its stated goal of addressing the problem of feral pythons in the Everglades. It would, however, have a tremendous impact on the trade of captive bred reptiles in the US and abroad including a number of pythons and Boa constrictor. The trade in captive bred reptiles is a $3 billion a year industry and US exports account for 82% of trade worldwide. S. 373 if passed would be devastating. Thousands of jobs would be lost and scores of small family owned businesses would be bankrupted.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the world’s largest business federation representing more than three million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region, opposes S. 373. According to the US Chamber of Commerce, “if enacted in its current form, this legislation would adversely impact tens of thousands of businesses”. The Chamber goes on to state that, “If, however, Congress intends to pass a ban to limit the import of the Burmese Python, then it is essential that the proposed ban be drafted as narrowly as possible”.

It will be a very sad day in our nation, if these two bills pass. All of our lives threw growing up with schooling and for those that attended collage we have learned that education is important. What is going on here when these people that... we voted for are ignoring the science that is setting there staring them right in the face. Is this what we teach the future generations to come? That educating ourselves about the wild life our world has to offer dont mean crap? That true science dont mean anything? I have loved snakes my whole life and have been around boa's for over 8 years, I never thought for one minute that we would ever have to face loosing our beloved pets. We need to all stand together and fight these ridiculas bills and once they have been destroyed, these folks that are trying to ruin not only our passion but to quite a few folks, our lively hood. We need to get them out of there, oh way to comfortable high horses and out of office for good! They seem to forget, That it was our votes that put them there and it is out votes that will remove them! I know I have sent my letters and made my phone calls and even sent my unanswered e-mails, HAVE YOU?

      Thanks.

The Senate Committee on the Environment & Public Works (EPW) has passed S. 373 aka 'The Python Ban'. The committee held a mark up session on S. 373, to amend title 18, United States Code, to add constricto...r snakes of the species Python genera to the Injurious Wildlife list of the Lacey Act. Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) (Ranking Member) expressed concerns about the bill. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) offered an amendment to limit the scope of the bill to only the 9 snakes addressed in the USGS report on large constrictors. Senator Cardin further agreed to work with Senator Inhofe to improve the bill prior to a vote on the Senate floor. The amendment was passed by voice vote. S373 was then voted out of Committee by voice vote with Senator Inhofe registering a NO vote.

S373 has now passed out of committee. It cannot become law until it is voted on and passed by the full Senate and House of Representatives. There is still much work to be done prior to the Python Ban becoming law. S373 in its current form is unacceptable to USARK and the Reptile Nation. We will continue to work with Senator Inhofe, Senator Cardin and the EPW Committee Staff to shape the future of this bill. Please make an appointment to visit with your Senator and express your concerns with S373. Everyone needs to step up and make contact with your Senator. Let USARK know about your meeting. It is time to step up our game and show Washington we are serious about this. Continue the good fight. The Reptile Nation thanks Senator Inhofe for his even handed treatment of our industry.

It is extremely important for everyone in the Reptile Nation to take direct action to STOP S. 373. If you don't take massive action now you may never get another chance to effect this legislation. We have come too far to give up now. We can win if we all pull together and take massive action. DO IT NOW!

      ACTION STEPS: USARK Senate Campaign

      1. Email your Senator- This is the simplest step to take. It is only effective if done as apart of USARK's comprehensive overall strategy. Email alone is the least effective way to get your message to Congress. Please click this link and follow the instructions to Email your Senator.

      http://www.rallycongress.com/united-states-association-of-reptile-keepers/2705/tell-us-senate-to-stop-python-ban/

      Then go to step 2.

      2. Phone your Senator- This is also an easy step that everyone can do. It is more effective than email when trying to get your message through, but still is best used as one part of the USARK Senate Campaign. Please click this link and follow the instructions to Phone your Senator.

      http://www.rallycongress.com/united-states-association-of-reptile-keepers/2707/tell-us-senate-to-stop-python-ban/

      Go to step 3.

      3. Visit your Senator- This is the single most effective way to influence your Senator. Make an appointment to go in and talk to your Senator's Staff. They will respond to your personal visit to their local offices. You don't have to go to Washington DC. This makes your Opposition to S373 personal and gives your Senator a reason to oppose the bill. Contact USARK and we will coach you and give you talking points to use with your Senator. We can help you get a strong message across. Just let us know once you have scheduled you appointment.

      Go to step 4.

      4. Report Back to USARK- We want to hear about your progress. We have set up a forum for each state where you can report your experiences. Let us know what happens. You can also discuss your experiences with others from your state. We are interested in all of your experiences, but especially those all important 'in person visits' with your Senator. Please click this link to Report Back to USARK.

      http://usark.org/forum/

You will have to register just like any other forum. Then go to the S373 Senate Campaign and click your state. We can't wait to hear from the Reptile Nation on this!

      Lobbying Campaign:

Not only is USARK is spearheading the grass roots fight against S373, but we are leading the lobbying effort for a coalition of interests in Washington, DC. We are the only organization involved in this issue that has a powerful professional lobbying presence on Capital Hill. We have employed a team of top flight lobbyists that have been engaged on S373 since it was introduced last winter. We have reached out to the Pet Industry and have been approached by the Fashion and Western Apparel Industries; all of whom are concerned by the implications of arbitrary legislation of new Lacey Act provisions that could negatively impact their business. This is a time when we need 'all hands on deck' to fight this ill conceived legislation. Unity is essential. There is Strength in Numbers... Protect Your Rights! We will continue to engage this fight at all levels.

      ***Join the Reptile Nation!

Forward this Alert to everyone you know... your friends, email lists, forums, social networking sites... everyone! This will only work if EVERYONE participates!! We must generate 10's of thousands of responses. Do it now! Go, GO, GO!!!!!

It's funny how rather than working to educate people about reptiles and their unique needs (unique as opposed to the more popular mammalian or avian pets), programs like the animal activist groups that push for amendments like these find it... easier to try and ban the whole lot: spoiling it for everyone! I can sympathize with their desire to remove animal contact with humans seeing as how many of us can't seem to offer up proper care for such animals (i.e. people freeing boas in their backyards, starving geckos, etc.), but I don't understand how they can demand the removal of a family pet that IS actually cared for and loved. If the animal is not in any pain and seems comfortable in their environment - even if that is with humans - why remove them from that security? Animals survive decades longer in captivity than they do in the wild, and there have been countless endangered species saved by having members still available in captivity.

Sorry for the rant. This kinda stuff just always seems to get my dander up. I just don't understand some of these people's motivations. It's like they want to make as many people (and in the process, animals) unhappy as they possibly can. Sometimes it seems as though they've never even been into contact with a domesticated creature and are basing their claims purely on ignorance.
