How could you be a surgeon without going to university? This illustrated talk details the progress of surgery from care by the monks who after a papal injunction passed the mantle on to the Barbers. You will hear about the influence of the Guilds of the City of London and the regulation of surgical training marked by a... Charter from King Henry VIII to the Barber Surgeons in 1545. An event that was immortalised in a painting by Hans Holbein. All this holds the key to the question of why surgeons in Britain are addressed as Mister or Miss and not Doctor.

This talk will be given by Mr Mike Pugh, FRCS

Visit the Royal College of Surgeons this summer for a rare chance to see the portrait of King Henry VIII with the Barber Surgeons by Hans Holbein the younger. The only opening to the public this year, the painting is on display in the College’s magnificent hall, and shows Henry VIII presenting the Charter of the Incorp...oration to the Company of Barber-Surgeons in 1541. The King is surrounded by his physicians and surgeons, including Thomas Vicary, the first master of the Company. This work is the cartoon produced in preparation for the final painting and shows the pin-prick holes used to mark out the major figures and key background features.

Follow on to the Council Room for a glimpse of the portrait of John Hunter by Sir Joshua Reynolds, also not usually on display to the public.

Gerald McEwen

Gerald McEwen Hi everyone, Are their any Henry VIII events taking place in the north of England? I went last night to Hampton Court to listen to some historians, a biographer and the novelist Hilary Mantel talk about how you managed to keep your head at Henry's court. It was a great event, but I just wondered if there was anything in the north west or north east coming up?

Henry VIII 2009 Events
A costumed re-enactment of Henry VIII’s first meeting with Anne of Cleves will take place by the War Memorial in Rochester at midday on Tuesday 4th August.

Rumour has it that Henry VIII first set eyes on his 4th wife in or around the grounds of Rochester Cathedral. The legend tells that he spied on her through a hole... built especially into a gate – didn’t like what he saw and promptly divorced her. Apparently artist Hans Holbein’s portrait was misleading to say the least! The event will draw on historical sources to bring the now infamous encounter to life for a modern audience in a comic and engaging way. Visitors will have a chance to meet Henry, Anne, and the artist responsible, in person at the Castle grounds between 1.30 and 4.30 pm.

* The re-enactment is at 11am *
