Rita Matthews Does Mr. Wooly speak to local groups? The Modesto Institute for Continued Learning, a learning in retirement group at Modesto Junior College, is concerned about the greening attempts and I understand Mr. Wooly is a champion in this field. We have a 10 AM class on Thursday mornings on west campus to discuss current events. Could you contact me about this please here on Facebook? Thank you.

Frank Aversa Also i want to move a 5 year old laurel tree, can it be moved during dormant season or should i just chop it down. I want to put more fruit trees in its place and move the laurel to my front yard .thank you all...

Move during mid-December to January. Remove as large a rootball as possible and make sure you cut it way way back. You don't want it to be more than 3x the rootball. It's quite a bit of work to do this, so it may be easier to buy a new Laurel tree.

Frank Aversa Hey you all just got another ? Can you trick an apple tree to think its getting more chill hours by pulling off all the leaves a little earlier befor it goes dormant? Thanx

you don't need to trick an apple tree. We don't really believe that there's such thing as a high chill apple.

Dave Wilson Nursery great article in Modesto Bee.

Dave Wilson Nursery got big by doing little things right. Workers propagate fruit and nut trees by taking a young branch from one variety and inserting it into a slit at the base of an established tree. Other steps follow in the months ahead.

Camilla Shaffer OK... so I planted a bunch of your trees bare-root last spring, but I wasn't brave enough to follow your instructions and top them... I did prune twice, at the end of spring and end of summer, but now I'm wondering if I can be radical and do what I should have done on planting, and if so, when?

I'm living in Nepal at 6000' with temperature ranges similar to northern CA coastal range. I bought five cherries from you....Bing, Montmoency, black Tartarian, Stella and Craig's Crimson. Now in mid-Nov. the wild cherry trees are blooming across the countryside, beautiful now but no edible fruit. Would it be possi...ble to graft the scion from Bing and others onto the wild ones. When would they bloom is the main question.Read More

yes, it should be possible. The one issue would be Craig's Crimson because it is patented and should not be replicated. The best time to do the grafting is when the trees are dormant, so if the rootstocks are already blooming do this as soon as possible to take advantage of the growing season. Make sure the scion sticks if you take off of your current cultivar they should be in full dormancy.

Dave Wilson Nursery Dave Wilson Nursery is gearing up for the Ag Hall of Fame dinner. Here's Betty Wynne, Dave Wilson's daughter, and Robert Woolley, Dave Wilson's grandson-in-law, doing the final edit on the video to be shown Thursday night.

Daniel Schaeffer

Daniel Schaeffer Hi. I underwatered my first year apple trees and two of them picked up a flathead borer which damn near girdled them. I'd say it ate the cambium about half-way 'round the trees. They're each about 1.25" in diameter near the base. Will the cambium grow back or are these trees going to be permanently underperforming. I planted them last February.

Thanks,
Dan

Without seeing the damage we can only guess. If the damage is indeed 1/2 way around the trunk that area will always be scar tissue and will never heal all the way through. More than likely the trees will always be
weak because of the borer issue. Our best recommendation is take the best care possible for the next full growing season and see how they respond.
