Kentucky Center for Mathematics Jonathan Thomas spent last week in Boulder, CO at the Realistic Mathematics Education Conference hosted by the Freudenthal Institute and the University of Colorado. This conference focused on the importance of contextualized learning experiences built upon student-centered developmental progressions.

Good for them!! I have worked with a few people from there before (but don't recognize anyone in the photos). The Freudenthal Institute partnered with UW-Madison to create the Mathematics in Context program (middle school constructivist approach). Great program, great people, great learning! I know it had to have been a phenomenal week for them!

That sounds like a whole other mouthful of training...Realistic Math Education? Now I know what my students feel like when I tell them about Imaginary Numbers and they ask me about fake numbers. Sounds interesting though!

Kentucky Center for Mathematics Pumpkin Math from Lynn Hambrick:
Granddaddy brought Gran some pumpkins. How many pumpkins can you see in the pictures?
Gran had 3 pumpkins and Granddaddy brought 20 more, so how many pumpkins does she have in all?
How many of the 23 pumpkins are not shown in the photos?

Toni Prickett

How many years old does Gran have to be in order for the picture to be so small that she can't discern the pumpkins from either the flowers or the lights in the windows? :D
