Scott Hann Does HSP own a large collection of photographs of Civil War soldiers? If not, who does in Philadelphia? I'm only familiar with the extensive collection at the USMHI in Carlisle, PA

SallyAnn McChesney

SallyAnn McChesney Does anyone know if coachmen were licensed in Philadelphia in the late 1800's? My great-grandfather was a "private" coachman at the Garrett-Dunn mansion and I am desperately trying to find some photo of him. Wonderful site by the way - glad to have "stumbled" across it!

HSP has Philadelphia city directories that might be a good place to check for a listing of coachmen -- and perhaps find your great-grandfather. Check www.hsp.org to learn how to visit HSP. Good luck, and let us know if you find a photo! We'd love to see it here on Facebook.

Johnstown has a really interesting history. A good resource for that is David McCullough’s book “Johnstown Flood.” HSP has that item plus plenty of other Cambria County material. To look at them, stop by our library at 1300 Locust Street. Or if you live far away, consider our research-by-mail service. Good luck with your research!
