I have this book called "Food Markets of the World" by Nelli Sheffer and Mimi Sheraton.  It is primarily a coffee table photography book, with vibrant photos of everyday food markets around Asia, Europe, Latin American, The Middle East, Africa, and the United States.  This book reminds me the m...

No I did not arrange these guys in a circle- they just did that, amazingly, on their own, each wanting to get a good look at the camera.  We got these seven Jersey calves from our local raw milk dairy, Claravale Farm.  The male calves aren't worth much, even less now that dairies are doing so p...

Every time I read your writing Rebecca I'm grateful. This piece in particular speaks to my heart. As you know, Claravale Dairy are our neighbors. There is a group of us living in Panoche Valley practicing what you preach, producing beef, pork, lamb, eggs and broilers. We've recently learned that a company called Solargen has been working with ... See MoreSan Benito County on a project that will be the largest solar powered utility company in the world. Location? Panoche Valley! They want to pave the entire valley with solar panels. We're the only spot in the Central Valley with a water table that rises yearly. Productive, fertile, family owned farms with plenty of water are being threatened all in the name of huge corporate profits. Solar should be on rooftops, not taking fertile farmland out of production. Thank you so much for educating folks about sustainable food production and how valuable it is.

Remember my story of watching in awe as giant salmon swam by the fish viewing window at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River?  Well last week I visited this same place with my daughter, hoping she too would be awed by the herculean feat that these salmon must endure to get up river.  In the 15 m...

After seeing King Corn, Fast Food Nation, reading Omnivore's Dilemma,  and other popular media on the dysfunctional nature of our food system, I was skeptical that I would learn much from the new movie Food Inc.  Popular media tends to dumb down subjects to the lay person's understanding, and I w...

I just watched King Corn and am so disturbed by this. I think if enough people are aware of this and the consequences to them and their families they would pressure corporations and government to make needed changes. Maybe I'm being naive to think that, but our food is killing us. I buy organic as much as possible. Its crazy that it has to be... See More so difficult and expensive to do that. I've searched and searched the web to find locally grown organic meats and dairy products and they are not that available. I want to do as much as I can to turn this around. Any practical ideas, besides not supporting fast food chains by not eating there, etc.?

What happens when over 98% of the population does not farm or do farm labor but yet are completely dependent for their survival on the less than 2% of the population that does?  The first words that pop into my head are riskiness and dependency (& ignorance).  When a global economic system is s...
