Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby J. Hopewell announced today that he would seek re-election to the Kalamazoo City Commission this November. In making his announcement, Hopewell said the Kalamazoo region is seen by many as an economic bright spot – consistently ranking lowest in t...he state for unemployment. Frequent new jobs and new business announcements add to Kalamazoo’s record of accomplishment, despite the State’s dire economy and a protracted national recession. “We’ve accomplished much, together, but there is far more that can be done,” Hopewell said. “It’s been an honor to serve Kalamazoo as its mayor during what I consider one of our brightest but most challenging periods. I hope to continue my work on our community’s behalf. I’m optimistic that we can continue to move Kalamazoo forward.” Mayor Hopewell, who first joined the Commission in 2003, said the City’s priorities remain: 1) continuing to build community, 2) maintaining a sound city government; and, 3) continuing to ensure responsible and responsive city government. Hopewell cited several positive indicators for the community, including: the announcement of more than 4,000 new jobs to the region; significant enhancements and extensions to the trailways; $8.5 million in stimulus monies acquired for the city; $58 million earmarked for an improved I-94 Interchange in Portage, which Mayor Hopewell assisted in lobbying to acquire, knowing that this will bring jobs and economic benefit to the region; reorganization of and improvements to Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Safety; and youth employment programs that provide opportunities for our community’s next generation. “Kalamazoo is a great example of what can be achieved when a community pulls together,” Hopewell said. “Without question, the recession has increased our challenges. But throughout our history, challenge, to Kalamazoo, has meant opportunity. We cannot lose our momentum. And we need to ensure that every citizen in our community has the opportunity to participate in that forward movement.” About Mayor Hopewell Born and raised in Kalamazoo, Mayor Bobby J. Hopewell, 45, a resident of the Stuart Neighborhood, has spent his entire adult career in the service of others. From his professional positions in healthcare to his board memberships and civic responsibilities, he has demonstrated leadership and passion for improving the lives of all citizens in Kalamazoo. Hopewell is currently the Director of Hospitality Services at Borgess Medical Center. First elected to the Kalamazoo City Commission in 2003, he is a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Sienna Heights College.
