Seeking to explain some of the reasons behind the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston's growing preeminence in the field of Latin American art, a 2008 New York Times Magazine article pointed to its weakness in European modernist holdings compared with those of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Maria Ines Sicardi will conduct back-to-back tours of two exhibitions, Joaquín Torres-García: Constructing Abstraction with Wood at the Menil Collection and "Joaquín Torres-García: Houston Collections” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Born and educated in Buenos Aires, Sicardi moved to Houston in 1989.
Her Sicardi... Gallery, founded in 1994, has organized over a hundred exhibitions by artists from South America and Mexico. Admission to both museum tours is free.
The Menil tour will be at 5:30 pm followed by the MFAH tour at 7 pm.
