Poison Girl Cocktail Lounge On the first Sunday of every month, Poison Girl donates all the night's proceeds to a non-profit organization, with an emphasis on local Houston organizations. This Sunday, April 5th, we're thrilled to be supporting Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company.

Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company was founded in April of 2001 by ...actress Jennifer Decker and poet/ professor Dr. John Harvey. With, no budget , borrowed set pieces and costumes from the actors’ own closets, Harvey’s first play,Kama Sutra, was written, cast and ready to open in August, 2001.

Since that first production, under the artistic direction of Jennifer Decker, the company has created and performed seven seasons of productions, from original work by now resident playwright John Harvey, to Houston premiers of shows performed previously in New York and London (sic, Triptych, By the Bog of Cats, One Flea Spare, A Murder of Crows), to World premiers by prominent contemporary playwrights (Noah Haidle’sA Long History of Neglect). These productions have earned considerable praise from the press, and have won the company threeHouston Press: Best Of Houston awards (Best Theatre Company in 2006, Best Original Show for Rot in 2007, Best Theatre Company on a Shoestring Budget in 2008).The company has also mentioned in the national Magazine, American Theatre for their Texas tour of Rot in 2008 (an original play by John Harvey in collaboration with Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre).

Mildred’s Umbrella loves collaboration, and has worked with Bobbindoctrin Puppet Theatre, University of Houston Honors College, Houston Community College, The Museum of Fine Arts Houstonand theHouston Public Libraryto further enrich the city’s artistic scene through education and artistic growth.

March 26th
8:30-10:00

Readers:
Antonya Nelson
Kathleen Lee
Rus Bradburd

A good commando knows four things:
1) The importance of piano wire both as a way to silently dispatch your targets and as a way to compose little tunes and pass the time on long SST fligh...ts
2) strong record keeping skills (never know when you'll have to turn on your bosses and hand over your extensive notes to a senate subcommittee)
3) the importance of good literature
4) the frenzied unequaled passion of bloodlust

This March's reading will help you complete step three of your Commando training. At its completion you will be certified as an Ace Marksman in Bookishness and been given the opportunity to purchase a t-shirt as a handsome commemorative item to remember your achievement by.

This is elite training this month. You miss this training and you will find yourself a shabby back-alley assassin for hire, knocking over paperboys and cats who scatter the litterbox gunk all over the rumpus room.

No, really. This reading will change your life.

Kathleen Lee has traveled extensively for two decades in Asia, South America, and the Middle East. She has written for Conde Nast Traveler magazine, and her work appears in Best American Travel Writing 2001 and 2002. Her collection of stories is Travel Among Men.

Rus Bradburd is the author of Paddy on the Hardwood: A Journey in Irish Hoops. Chicago native Rus Bradburd coached college basketball at UTEP and New Mexico State for fourteen seasons before stunning the basketball world by resigning to pursue an MFA degree in 2000. Since retiring from college coaching, his essays have appeared in The Houston Chronicle, El Paso Times, Las Cruces Sun-News, Heartland Journal and Newspaper Tree. Rus went to Ireland in 2002 to coach Tralee's Frosties Tigers.

Antonya Nelson needs no introduction to Houston readers. She teaches creative writing at the University of Houston, and is the award-winning author of three novels and five short story collections. Her stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, and The Best American Short Stories, and her essays have appeared in Texas Monthly. Her new collection of stories is titled Nothing Right, which will be for sale at the reading.

Poison Girl Cocktail Lounge Poison Pen Reading Series
Thursday January 29th, 2009
8:30-Ripe
Poison Girl
1641 Westheimer

Before we begin this month's scheduled announcement:

It's really important to eat apples. And Poison Pen is proud to have been invited to serve on the President's Special Commission on the Intersection of Youth Culture and Apples. We,... of course, serve at the President's pleasure, but make no mistake we're gonna get to the bottom of some of the youth gang influence peddling going on in the dirty underbelly of the apple world. We cannot be bought. We cannot be threatened. No matter what your varietal. So take that, you Braeburn punks. You can go core yourself.

Thank you.

This month's reading features (and their corresponding apple*)

The Fallawater - Chuck Carlise – Poet/essayist – Beneath its tough skin the greenish yellow flesh is firm, juicy and mildly tart. Best when cooked into sauce or made into pies as it does not rate high for fresh eating.

The Belle De Boskoop: Casey Fleming – Fiction/essayist – Excels as a longtime keeper, sweetens in storage. Greenish-yellow flushed with brick red and a light russeting. Flesh aromatic, acid tart and crisp.

And, all the way from Northern Ohio

The Beautiful Arcade himself

Michael Dumanis – Poet and Author of My Soviet Union, Co-Editor of Legitimate Dangers - Good sauce and culinary apple. Large, green fruit turning to light green upon ripening. Sometimes over 6 inches in diameter. Sub-acid to mildly sweet flavor.
