INSTEON If you could automate something in your home, what would it be?

I would love to automate the blinds in my house. There seem to be no good products for opening and closing blinds as the sun travels around the house.

I want temperature, humidity, motion, and CO2 sensors in Insteon-controlled light switches. So much could be achieved with a device like that.

Dan

Dan With all the DIY electronics abilities people have (a la sparkfun.com, Make.com, Arduino microcontrollers) it would be really nice to see an easy-to-use RF interface chip, perhaps you could market it through SparkFun if SmartHome isn't appropriate for tinkerer parts.

You're right, Dan. Introducing INSTEON into the DIY crowds of Make, SparkFun and Instructables would be great.

Any other fans out there looking for something like this?

There's also sites like phidgets.com (usb controlled sensors) and similar electronic tinkerer sites (here's a list) http://www.xmarks.com/site/www.phidgets.com/

I need a % discount coupon. I have quite a few items that I would like to order...but the final bill is quite hefty. Any thoughts on when you'll have another % based discount? Coupons?

Michael Luckeroth

Michael Luckeroth When will we ever see a controller for ceiling fans with light kits? I would love to be able to control the fan with 3 speeds (reverse optional) and a light that could be dimmed. Using the Indigo Home Automation Software I would then be able to use the fan more efficiently to save electricity for heating and cooling.

A dedicated device that does what you describe is unlikely to be developed in the near future. What we can do with some ceiling fan manufactures is use our KeypadLinc to control two inline dimmers and set the dimmer for the fan to three different levels of fan speed by linking it to different preset dim levels. Keep in mind that not all fans like ... Read Moreto have dimmers put on them, but the ones that do work fine. The other inline dimmer would be connected to another button on the keypad. One way to tell if a ceiling fan is a good candidate for a dimmer to be controlling it would be to try it and see if the fan starts making a loud humming noise when you are dimming the switch that is controlling the speed. If it makes a loud hum then it should not be used if it is reasonable quite then it will be fine.
