Town and Country Gardens

Town and Country Gardens Now is the most important time to fertilize your lawn. Use Fertilome’s Winterizer. Water it in after applying. Don’t forget to “blow-out” your automated sprinkler systems and undo hoses from the outside faucets. Buurrrr… winter is just around the corner!

Town and Country Gardens A GREAT IDEA from Kent Higgins.... I tried this approach to fill the spaces on my rock wall. These are Town & Country Strawberrys called Seascape. I get a yield into November. This works amazingly well to keep out the weeds. And it’s kinda cute.

I'd love a rock wall like that.

Town and Country Gardens Dig gladiolus corms up if the foliage has been killed by frost. Shake off excess soil and sort the corms. Cut the stem just above each corm. "Preserve" corms for about three weeks in a warm, dry, airy place. Then place the corms in paper or cloth sacks. Store them in a well-ventilated place that's dry and cool. Then plant them again next spring!

Town and Country Gardens TIP: Cut fragrant flowers early in the day while they are full of moisture. Scent resides within the cells of the petals, so the higher the water content, the higher the amount of scent ingredient. Prolong the delight by displaying them in a vase that is set in indirect or low light.

Town and Country Gardens Hollyhocks produce seeds that fall around the parent plant and come up as volunteers the following spring. Removing the faded flower stalks now before the seeds drop to the ground will help reduce the spread of the patch to unwanted areas. (I know from experience! :)

Can you tell me if it's best to plant seeds from this years flowers now, or wait until spring? I've been trying to collect a variety of different flower seeds from neighbor's plants, to liven up my yard... but not sure when to plant them. :-) (Where can I get Hollyhock starts?)

Gee, too bad you weren't at my house about a month ago. We ripped out lots of hollyhocks so we could plant rose bushes.

Harvest the seeds when husks turn brown. Plant any time now directly in the garden or store the seeds and plant them in the spring indoors in a sunny window to be planted out later. We have starts available now at Town & Country.

Town and Country Gardens Hot weather causes the compost pile to go into overdrive, provided you keep it moist. So stop by with the hose every now and then and give it a good soaking. Then stir up the pile with a shovel.

David Jolley What is the best way to make tomatoes When the friut is green to start getting red, Ive heard that less water works ?

Letting them dry out does speed up the ripening, but it also makes the skin tougher and decreases fruit quality. I wouldn't resort to drought stress until September. Just be patient. This warmer weather should speed things along.

John, should we keep covering the tomatoes while they ripen or harvest the green ones and let them ripen in the garage. I have about a dozen tomato plants and we are in the midst of canning nightly from them.

Town and Country Gardens One of my favorite summer flowers is the Fleming Hibiscus. They may look tropical, but they are actually perennials- hardy to minus 30 degrees. And they have flowers as big as your hand. I took these pictures in the nursery this morning.

The picture on the left is 'Kopper King' (my favorite). On the right is 'Plum Crazy'. They are blooming spectacularly in the nursery right now. The hibiscus at home haven't quite opened yet, but are getting close.

Town and Country Gardens Final call for fertilizing your roses. Fertilizing any later in the summer may cause the rose not to go dormant in time for winter.

Best time to transplant a rose bush would be in the early spring. (April)
