Ikigai | Blogging the Martial Way DISCUSSION TOPIC: Do martial arts seep into the day-to-day clothes you wear and things you carry? What do you do on a routine basis to better prepare yourself for self-defense situations in real life? (example: avoiding flip-flops and sandals whenever possible).

Muhammed

Muhammed just a recent think i was telling a student, do you know what the do-gi represents?
the do-gi was originally worn by the samurai into battle, because there was a good chance of dieing they would ware their Burial robes. which is common all threw out different parts of Asian continent except for the wearing them into battle part.

What bugs me. The do-gi or dobak in american culture doesn't symbolize the same that i does in purest martial arts. That garment has been become a product of the ever so general "karate" market and young childern wear them ages as young as 3-4. In other cultures when you wear it you have the mentality of preparedness to die. I hope a uniform ... See Moresuch as the XMA power ranger get'up will replace it in conventional "american" martial art or daycare like settings. Something with such history should be retained and not exploited.

Greg Lehtimaki

Greg Lehtimaki I had a thought today...since the finese of Kata has been a topic as of late...I was spending some time with my granddaughter and I notice little development things as she grows. As in life, Kata has a life...When my own kids were growing up, I did not recognize or see the little things in their development perhaps be...cause I was young and immature, thinking of getting through the moment. Like Kata, I now notice the little things and how important the movements are to growing in the art, Im not just going through the motions.

like Tai Chi, first you master the movements by count. then you work on the flow, then you work on the breathing, then you bring it to life. I'm sure there are plenty of steps beyond that, but I'm still trying to get some flow... 8\

Ikigai | Blogging the Martial Way NEW ARTICLE: Tegumi...the lost art of Okinawa grappling. Read about what it was, what it is, and how to find it in your system - http://www.ikigaiway.com/2009/tegumi-okinawan-grappling-and-wrestling/

www.ikigaiway.com
Is there grappling or wrestling in karate? It's easy to wonder - most of what we see is punching and kicking. But the Okinawan creators of karate had something else called tegumi.

It is interesting to note that the word Tegumi and the modern term Kumite are one in the same. The meaning of which is to struggle with the hands.

some are useful - depends on the environment. disarming, reversals and escapes, pain compliance are all very useful, but getting department buy-in would probably be a P.I.T.A.
