No mountains in Indianapolis-- but we can help to preserve them in our neighboring states!
The Mountaintop Removal Road Show will be presented on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. in the Indianapolis Art Center's library at 800 E. 67th Street in Indianapolis. Its a free-to-the-public educational forum.
In Virginia, West ...Virginia and eastern Kentucky, coal companies blast as much as 600 feet off the top of the mountains, and then dump the rock and debris into mountain streams. Over 300,000 acres of the most beautiful and productive hardwood forests in America have been turned into barren grasslands. Mountaintop removal coal mining destroys streams, increases flooding, contaminates drinking water supplies, cracks home foundations, and showers towns with dust and noise from blasting.
Learn what we can do to help preserve our common natural heritage. Discover what Indianapolis Power and Light, and other electric utilities, could be doing to encourage conservation and green energy development. Lexington, Kentucky-based environmental activist Dave Cooper will share what its like to live near a mountaintop removal mine as he presents his Mountaintop Removal Road Show, a beautiful and thought-provoking multimedia presentation featuring traditional Appalachian music and culture. Hell also answer questions from the audience about this important issue.
Following Daves presentation, the audience is invited to gather at Union Jack Pub (smoke-free) at 924 Broad Ripple Avenue. (Union Jacks proprietor has been the driving force in creating a much-needed cooperative recycling program among Broad Ripple businesses).
This presentation is sponsored by several local environmental and energy groups
