After months of suffering and death from the plague in 1633, the people of the tiny village of Oberammergau, situated in the Bavarian Alps, made a promise before God that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" once every ten years.

Today, more than 1,500 cast and ...crew take part in Obermmergau's Passion Play, all of whom are residents of the village. With the current population of
Oberammergau standing at 5,360, this means almost half of villagers are involved in the
Passion Play. The main parts, which are highly revered, are traditionally played by villagers who
demonstrate flawless moral character. During the season, actors with small roles are often
permitted to leave work to perform, then return.

The sheer spectacle of the performance is unlike any production ever seen and attracts thousands of worshippers from all over the world.
