Institute for Policy Studies IPS has done a lot of work around the events in Iran -- read about it in this week's Unconventional Wisdom newsletter: http://bit.ly/19wXMQ

As we watch with horror the brutality of Iranian security forces beating peaceful protesters, we have a natural tendency to ask: "What can the United States do to help?" Many groups on both the right and left have called for the Obama administration to find ways to "act."

Pubali at 3:14pm June 25
If what the United States has done to "help" any other country in the world is an example, then the U.S. should stay out of this instead of coming bullyin in. What the U.S. can do is to go to the U.N. and consult with other nations as to the best course to follow. For once, please let us act like we are a nation, a democractic nation, and not a power-maddened criminal.

If the countries oppressed by us say: this is what we need, do this, do that, that is EXACTLY what we shd do. If we say: Look, here's what I'm gonna do - well, then, it's the same scoundrelly procedure we have followed toward other nations for over a century.

The US just got voted into the UN Human Rights Council. Do you think Obama will set a new precedent and engage as partners with its members?

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States was elected to the U.N. Human Rights Council for the first time on Tuesday after the Obama administration reversed its predecessor's policy of boycotting the body.

I think that the US will work toward providing states advice on reforming national laws to incorporate international human rights norms and laws. The US may chose a bipartisan policy of engagement with other members, hopefully quiet diplomacy as opposed to public pressure, in order to promote efforts toward improving the lives of those victimized or obstructed in cruel and unusual ways by those in power to live according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
