On Tuesday of this week, U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (Texas, 25th District) met on Capitol Hill with Tenzin Gyatso, better known as His Holiness the Dalai
Lama. They discussed human rights, the rule of law, and other issues of
shared concern between Americans and the Tibetan people.
At the end of the discussion, the ...Dalai Lama presented the Congressman with a
Tibetan prayer shawl and an autographed copy of his autobiography,
"Freedom in Exile." (Click on the link for a photo.)
Congressman Doggett is a sponsor of H.R. 1340, the Tibetan Refugee
Assistance Act. This bill was the result of a prior personal plea from
the Dalai Lama and will provide 3,000 qualified Tibetans with immigrant
visas to the United States. In addition to relieving overburdened
settlements of displaced Tibetans in India and Nepal, it will give
thousands the opportunity to flourish in communities across
