Free Program from our new monthly series, "Immerse Yourself!" The Spanish treasure fleet of 1733 wrecked in a violent hurricane along 80 miles of the Florida Keys. With the discovery of the first shipwreck in the late 1940's and the growth of scuba diving in the 1950's and 60's enabling treasure hunters to locate most ...of the fleet, these wrecks suffered from haphazard digging and the loss of much information. Today, these shipwrecks are among the oldest and most vibrant artificial reefs in the Keys. Della Scott-Ireton, PhD, Director of Northwest Region of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, UWF will tell the real story of the fleet disaster and the archaeological importance of the sunken ships.Read More

Ken Nedimyer of the Coral Restoration Foundation will present an update on local coral research and restoration efforts, including amazing video of the August 2009 coral spawn which occurred in Keys waters.
Nedimyer developed a passion for the reef at an ...early age, diving and fishing in the Florida Keys. Following graduation from Florida Atlantic University, with a degree in marine biology, he moved to the Keys to pursue his passion. In 2000, his attention turned more toward research and restoration, particularly of elkhorn and staghorn coral.
Nedimyer's underwater coral nursery is the first of its kind in the nation. His coral restoration work has gained national attention.

I visited the Diving History Museum in Islamorada, FL today. The helmet at the end of the clip is a Navy helium helmet, definitely my favorite piece in the collection. The helmet alone weighs 104 pounds. See more at http://picasaweb.google.com/jamiebrisbin/DivingHistoryMuseum
